Dear Family, Friends, and Supporters,
We are writing to you today on behalf of Michael Lopez, our 26- year-old nephew who recently suffered a life-changing spinal cord injury following a tragic diving accident. Now a quadriplegic with no use of his legs and limited use of his arms, Michael has spent the last several months in medical and rehab facilities in Virginia and Colorado. He finally returns home to Albuquerque.

Michael is a well-loved young man who was just beginning his independent adult life following graduation from Albuquerque Academy and Colorado College. He enjoyed his employment with the University of New Mexico for the last few years, and was excited to go on his first earned vacation during which time the accident occurred. Michael harbors a strong love of the outdoors and especially loves skiing, tennis, swimming and soccer, along with his role as uncle to his first nephew, Evan, who is a toddler.

Although he faces many struggles, Michael remains hopeful that he will be able to one day return to a productive life in the community through the support of family and friends. Even with insurance he will face many uninsured injury-related expenses such as: several necessary accessible home modifications, a modified van which will provide Michael with greater independence (estimated cost at $65,000), the purchase of specialized equipment to aid in everyday living, doctors’ visits, home healthcare and additional rehab therapies.
