Michael is a well-loved young man who was just beginning his independent adult life following graduation from Albuquerque Academy and Colorado College. He enjoyed his employment with the University of New Mexico for the last few years, and was excited to go on his first earned vacation during which time the accident occurred. Michael harbors a strong love of the outdoors and especially loves skiing, tennis, swimming and soccer, along with his role as uncle to his first nephew, Evan, who is a toddler.
Although he faces many struggles, Michael remains hopeful that he will be able to one day return to a productive life in the community through the support of family and friends. Even with insurance he will face many uninsured injury-related expenses such as: several necessary accessible home modifications, a modified van which will provide Michael with greater independence (estimated cost at $65,000), the purchase of specialized equipment to aid in everyday living, doctors’ visits, home healthcare and additional rehab therapies.
To help offset such expenses, a fundraising campaign in Michael’s honor has been established with HelpHOPELive, a nonprofit organization that has been assisting the transplant community for 30 years. In 2000, they expanded their mission to include those who have sustained a catastrophic injury. All contributions are tax-deductible, are held by HelpHOPELive in the Southwest Spinal Cord Injury Fund, and are administered by HelpHOPELive for injury-related expenses only. If you would like to make a contribution:For more information, please contact HelpHOPELive at 800.642.8399.
