Rosaurys is a 23-year-old woman who was recently diagnosed with end stage heart failure and now in urgent need of a heart transplant.
She was born in Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic, and moved to the United States in 2018 with her family for better educational and vocational opportunities. She completed high school and started to work as a home health attendant. In her spare time, Rosaurys enjoys collecting makeup products, practicing application techniques she learns from videos, and listening to bachata music. Her ultimate goal is become a lawyer to help vulnerable minority populations.
She was living a relatively normal life when in October 2023 she went for an evaluation at her local hospital in Brooklyn for worsening shortness of breath. She was found to have severe heart failure and transferred to the Northwell hospital system where it became clear that she was in emergent need of a heart transplant and was not responding to medical therapy. Her condition worsened to the point where she had to be placed on VA ECMO, which is essentially a series of tubes and pumps completely taking over the role of her heart and lungs. She remains in critical condition awaiting a suitable donor for heart transplant.
Rosaurys is the sole income earner of her household comprised of her mother, her 18-year-old brother, and stepfather. Her mother is unable to work due to a motor vehicle accident which has led to longstanding mobility problems and her stepfather has medical ailments preventing steady employment.
Once Rosaurys receives a heart transplant, she will be unable to work for at least 6 months to a year while she recovers physically from the surgery and more crucially, needs to avoid the chronically ill patients she typically cares for as a home health attendant because she will be on immunosuppression that will increase her chances of contracting a severe infection. There will no longer be a steady income for her household.
While medically her life could be saved by a heart transplant, it still won’t absolve the needs of her and her family such as the capacity to pay rent, buy groceries, and cover monthly bills. Everyone should have access to the highest levels of healthcare and it would be tragic for her to fall through the cracks because of non-medical financial needs. Any contributions to this fund would go a long way to supporting her and her family as she recuperates after transplant.
Rosaurys has chosen to fundraise for Help Hope Live in part because Help Hope Live assures fiscal accountability of funds raised and tax deductibility for contributors.
