I have Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) and Cranio-cervical Instability (CCI) and intense chronic pain 24/7. Treatment for CCI is not covered by my insurance. I am trying to raise money for treatment for CCI and Chronic Pain by EDS knowledgeable practitioners.
I have a passion for disability advocacy and I help run the Des Moines Iowa Ehlers Danlos support group. My faith in Jesus Christ is very important to me and I am active in my local church, Frontier Church. I have part time roles at both UnityPoint hospitals as a Unit Secretary and the Des Moines Public Schools as a Substitute Teacher. My ability to work is greatly impacted by my pain, fatigue and spine instability.
The funds raised will be used for medical expenses that aren’t covered by insurance.
Massage therapy regularly helps me manage my pain without the regular use of controlled pain meds however therapy costs $90 a session so I can’t afford it as often as necessary so I need to use the strong meds more frequently.
There is a treatment for CCI called atlas orthogonal therapy that I found a practitioner locally however my insurance doesn’t cover her. Hopefully this will help my spine until I am able to see an EDS knowledgeable neurosurgeon for my spine out on the east coast.
Please pray for me and help donate if possible toward my treatment. Hopefully this will help me manage my pain more effectively and treat my spine instability.

Update from NYC trip.
Two weeks ago I was in NYC to see Dr Bolognese and his team and have some neurological tests. These tests involved a small surgery. This visit was very beneficial and yielded lots of answers and some new diagnosises, best yet, we have a plan for moving forward.
Many of my neurological symptoms I have had for years I finally have an explanation for!!! This is so exciting and validating.
In summary, I have an unstable cervical spine both in the vertical and horizontal directions, both my jugular veins in my neck are being compressed, this compression is causing intracranial hypertension when I'm lying down (basically the csf fluid is causing too much pressure), and there is a tiny leak of CSF somewhere (still got to investigate exactly where) that is causing intracranial hypotension when I'm upright (too low of pressure), my spinal cord is tethered, among with some other findings.
The plan is to have surgery to fuse my upper cervical spine and to decompress the jugular vein on June 4th. I will need to be in NYC about 3 weeks total with the recovery process. Although insurance is paying for most of the surgery I still have costs of hotel in nyc, as well as airfare for myself and various friends to stay with me and help me. I also have not been able to work even part time since Jan due to increased pain and fatigue.
I appreciate your prayers and support. Thanks,
Marie Christian
Would you please pray for me?
So it has been sometime since I posted an update. The spine surgery was put on hold and waiting on hearing back from DR Bolognese in NYC. However while I was waiting I had the hernia repair surgery up at Mayo last week. I am still up at Mayo but will be discharged soon possibly as early as tomorrow. I am in pain but so far it looks like the surgery did its job. Insurance wise they will be paying for this surgery up at Mayo 100% and so I will have minimal cost with the three nights at hotel in the area for the pre appointments.
Thank you for those of you who have donated, both here and to my venmo.
There is the lofty goal of 19,000 more in 2 weeks. It seems impossible, but God does provide. (Some of this could be a loan bc my insurance will reimburse me for part of it, but I can't find anywhere that will loan me money with having low income).
Thanks for your prayers and support.
Well it is now July. . my surgery is 23 days away. That is crazy.
I currently am in a situation where I need either a loan or a grant or something. Although my insurance agreed to reimburse me up to 80% of the surgeon fees, and the hospital fees are basically covered, and I have received so much help to cover the pre appts. The situation is the Dr wants paid 24k by July 16, and the insurance won't pay until after the procedure so it will be a reimbursement to me. A simple solution would seem to be a loan, but because my income is so small, I don't qualify for a loan without a cosigner even though I have great credit. So I am in a pickle how to get the money to pay the surgeon.
If anyone has any resources, grants, loans, etc ... That you know of. I have basically reached out to the places I know about. I would be so grateful. Also, please pray. I know God will provide a way. But I often get anxious. Pray he would give me peace and patience while he works out the details.
Thanks so much friends.
On Monday I had a virtual appointment with Dr Henderson in Maryland. He is one of the top experts for neurological and spine issues in people with ehlers danlos. The appointment went well. He was able to confirm the diagnosis of cervical instability.
The next step is going to see him in May for an in person appointment and a special scan called a rotational CT. We don't have that kind of CT in Iowa.
There is a very high probability I will need spinal surgery later this year to fix the instability and where my spinal cord is being "pinched".
Would you pray for funds for Travel to Maryland and stay there 2-3 days as well as the cost of the Dr and scan because both are not in network with my insurance company.
On another note I have an appointment in April at Mayo to see a Dr about my parastomal hernia. Hopefully they can do something about that, however, likely surgery is the only fix for it since it is now basketball sized.
I appreciate your support and prayers.
Thanks.
I am launching EDS shirts for sale with a portion of the proceeds going toward my medical costs. www.bonfire.com/ehlers-danlos-syndrome-5

I saw your post on fear of being a burden. Please never confuse weary with worth. Your worth comes from your eternal never changing Creator God, while weary and worry come from fallible sinful man. Praise God from whom all blessings flow!
