Chandra Smith is an IT engineer at the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) and an accessibility advocate. She faced a life-altering crisis in 2021 when her health deteriorated, leading to multi-organ failure and a stroke. After spending three weeks in a coma, she woke up and discovered she was septic and had to have three life-saving amputations. Despite being given a 1% chance of survival, she chose to fight.
After enduring a year and a day in the hospital, including six months in a burn unit due to 25 percent of her body being covered in medical burns, Chandra emerged as a testament to human resilience. She returned to her work, advocating for accessibility despite her physical limitations.
To expand her advocacy, she competed in the Ms. Wheelchair America competition and was crowned Ms. Wheelchair America 2024. Although she continues to fight for an inclusive society, her new battle is to reclaim her independence. She would like to raise $300,000, which would help her pay her astronomical medical debt and allow her to purchase an adaptive vehicle, an electronic hand, and a prosthetic leg.
Your donation to Help Hope Live is tax-deductible and can turn Chandra’s dreams into reality, empowering her to continue her invaluable work. Rally for Chandra, support her cause and inspire others to join this movement. With your generosity, Chandra’s fight for independence and inclusivity will be victorious.
Family and friends of Chandra Smith are raising money for the nonprofit Help Hope Live to fund uninsured medical expenses associated with Chandra’s catastrophic Illness.
