"Help Hope Live" on this Giving Tuesday for Taran Nolan

We are raising money alongside the nonprofit “Help Hope Live” to fund the uninsured medical and caregiving expenses associated with Tar Nolan’s spinal cord and traumatic brain injury. Tar has chosen to fundraise with Help Hope Live because this non-profit assures fiscal accountability of funds raised, and tax deductibility for contributors who can be sure donations will be used to pay or reimburse ONLY her medical and related expenses. To make a tax-deductible donation to this fundraising campaign specifically for Tar, please click on the “Give” button. We wanted there to be an option for donors to receive a tax deduction, and an additional layer of accountability of where the money goes. Help Hope Live, provides that accountability. As most of you know, Tar was involved in a devastating car accident in September 2020. The accident took the life of her 3 year old daughter, the other driver, and left her paralyzed from a spinal cord injury, with a traumatic brain injury, and many other broken bones and injuries. The catastrophic nature of these injuries, coupled with the ongoing and chronic nature of symptoms, means that most spinal cord injury survivors can expect to incur significant expenses and not all are covered by Medicare and Medicaid, particularly caregiving and physical therapy. While in home supportive services cover some of the caregiving costs, it doesn’t cover even close to all of it.Statistically, 1-3 years after the injury, just 11.7% of people with a spinal cord injury are employed. At this time, Tar is unable to work due to the extent of her paralysis, and though her TBI symptoms are much improved, she does still experience some memory loss and mild cognition deficits. She continues to be treated on a regular basis by a team of medical professionals and has a primary care doctor, a nurse/case manager, neurologist, psychiatrist, mental health therapist, occupational therapist and more. Despite having Medicare, she is still responsible for a portion of her medical bills, and many costs are simply not covered. We WANT her to not just survive, but thrive – with therapy that will ultimately result in the best possible outcome. Her future goals include starting her own foundation and charity to help others going through what she herself has experienced. She’s just not there yet.The estimated cost of care for a spinal cord patient per year is $184,891. The government does provide assistance with caregiving, however they only pay a portion of what most people will work for, so the patient has to pay that “gap” amount, and in Tar’s case, the amount of hours she was approved for, do not adequately cover the amount of time she needs someone there for. Even paying out of pocket, she still doesn’t have someone there during the night. All that being said – Tar is WELL AWARE that she has been blessed with resources that many do not have (oh, if only we could fix that!) We have convinced her that there are many of you who love her, and who want to see her continue on her journey back to an even more full and vibrant life than the one she has now. Every day for a long time has been a struggle — physically, emotionally and financially. We have all worked extremely hard putting in place a network of resources and advisors that we hope and pray will provide her long term peace of mind and security.
