Kurt, a respected and beloved primary care physician in the Dallas, Pennsylvania community, became a well-known figure due to his unwavering dedication to his patients. However, his life took an unexpected turn when, at 64 years old, he suffered a traumatic spinal cord injury after a fall at home. Following an extensive rehabilitation period at Jefferson Moss-Magee Rehabilitation Hospital in Philadelphia, Kurt is now back home with his devoted family, but is confined to a wheelchair for the foreseeable future.
Known for his vibrant love for the beach, skiing, curling, foraging for mushrooms with his wife, and an unyielding passion for the Minnesota Vikings (SKOL!), Kurt has always been a source of joy and laughter for family and friends. Beyond his infectious spirit (and laugh), he has served as a compassionate source of medical care for countless individuals in the Dallas community.
Kurt’s immediate family consists of his loving wife, Sylvia, and their two wonderful daughters, Kelsey and Maria. Kelsey has temporarily stepped away from her role as an occupational therapist at Johns Hopkins Hospital, committing her expertise to facilitate Kurt’s transition from rehabilitation to home. Armed with specialized knowledge in the field, Kelsey possesses a profound understanding of the devices crucial for Kurt’s daily life, all aimed at promoting his independence.
In the face of his diagnosis, Kurt is currently grappling with the challenges posed by his spinal cord injury. To enhance his mobility and regain a sense of independence, he is embarking on a fundraising campaign. The focal point of this effort is to acquire a MYOLYN Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) system. This cutting-edge technology empowers individuals like Kurt to overcome muscle weakness or paralysis by utilizing small amounts of electricity to facilitate muscle contractions and achieve functional movements.
Furthermore, Kurt is actively seeking support for an EasyStand Glider— a therapeutic device meticulously designed to offer stability and facilitate standing within the familiarity of his home environment. This is not only essential for his day-to-day activities but also crucial for maintaining bone density, minimizing the risk of fractures during transfers. (cost: $6,304)
Notably, the closest available MYOLYN bike and EasyStand frame is an hour away in the community, emphasizing the need for local accessibility. The dual fundraising initiative is strategically crafted to enhance Kurt’s overall quality of life, empowering him to engage in therapeutic exercises and achieve functional outcomes despite the inherent challenges presented by his spinal cord injury. Your generous contributions will play a vital role in securing these critical resources and making a lasting impact on Kurt’s journey to recovery. (cost:
$11,450)
Supporting Kurt in his journey involves a multifaceted approach. Our primary goal is to build strength, fostering greater independence by enabling him to transfer and perform essential self-care tasks. This strength is not only crucial for day-to-day activities but also serves as a foundation for broader aspirations, such as weight loss to facilitate participation in adaptive skiing. Additionally, maintaining muscle integrity is imperative, not only for present well-being but also in preparation for potential future recovery. Your contributions will play a pivotal role in realizing these specific objectives, allowing Kurt to engage in quality time with his family and pursue the activities that bring him joy.
Every contribution, no matter the size, to Kurt’s campaign will not only support his journey toward recovery but also reaffirm the resilience of a beloved community figure who has dedicated his life to the well-being of others. Together, let’s empower Kurt to continue inspiring laughter, love, and care within the Dallas community.
