I was diagnosed with pulmonary arterial hypertension in 2016 and am active on the lung transplant registry. My transplant will be for two lungs through UTSW in Dallas, TX.
PAH is a rare disease, affecting around 100,000 people worldwide. It starts with dizziness, shortness of breath and unexplained weight gain from fluid retention. Overtime, the arteries in the lungs stiffen and in my case oxygen is needed. I take a lot of oral meds as well as mix an IV drug and recently started a newly approved injectable med. Luckily, I mostly do as I wish with some restrictions but that will become more difficult the harder my lungs have to work.
I am fundraising because after transplant, I have to stay in Dallas close to the hospital and need help paying for housing and expenses my wonderful friends will have as they help care for me during recovery. I am expected to have to stay in Dallas three months after the surgery while maintaining my home in Austin.

Hi all! I had a successful double lung transplant in early May.Unfortunately, I did have a setback in early June as I had a pulmonary embolism and blood clots in arms/ legs. I was released July 8 from rehab which focused on regaining walking ability and am doing well..i will be in Dallas till early August at an apt near UTSW and have great friends helping with meds, driving, etc Looking forward to being home late summer.
Thanks y’all for your amazing support! Please keep sharing

Wendy is (medically) very close to receiving the gift of lungs. This last summer she was called to Dallas (twice) and the second time they actually had her on the operating table before they decided the donated lungs were not viable due to a previously undiagnosed pulmonary illness in the "new" lungs.
I can't imagine what an emotional rollercoaster it is for her family and friends! Several are identified as "designated caregivers," and of those, some are in Austin and can easily go to Dallas, but another is in Seattle!
Obviously, there are many logistics that have to be worked out in a very compressed time frame.
I have also learned that the calls she gets have occurred late at night or early in the morning, so other than "stand by" there is little anyone can do to plan ahead. She has to be ready to go at a moment's notice so she gets in a car, makes calls and hopes others can sort things out.
Our gifts through this site mean we can help pay not only some of Wendy's expenses (during her recovery which must be near the medical center where the doctor is) but also the expenses of caregivers.
FYI - these numbers are based on the six or more weeks she must stay in Dallas, and - as we all know - money is needed now - due in part to the fact that insurance only reimburses transplant patients.
Thank you so much for helping!
Julie
