Jordan has Charcot- Marie- Tooth disease, Muscular dystrophy, type 2 A, and asthma. Though having this genetic disorder since birth, he was not diagnosed until age 6. His mother had began talking to doctors around age 2 when she noticed his struggles to walk. Jordan is now 15 years old, and a freshman at Rock Hill High school in southern Ohio. He is planning to start his sophomore year in August on 2024. He is hoping to find a job this summer and start studying for his driver’s exam.
Who Jordan Is
Jordan loves fishing, and sporting events of all kinds but high school football is by far his favorite. He loves old fast cars, hanging with his friends, and sometimes enjoys unique genres of music. He is currently listening to acapella music most of the time. He enjoys watching You Tube videos, and documentaries about psychology and other interesting topics. He plans to attend the local career center during his Junior and Senior year and study mechanics. He would like his own shop one day.
The struggle is real
Jordan has a lot of medical appointments but also other activities and events that he would like to participate in, however currently the family lacks accessible transportation. Jordan is a growing young man and his smaller mother is his primary caretaker. His new powerchair is wonderful but to heavy, at almost 800 lbs., to be lifted or moved safely by his caregiver. Jordan is able to move around some independently on the ground but that is very unsafe in a post Covid germ world especially in public settings. He needs some support with fine and gross motor skills too so mom is able to help him with self-care needs, and he is able to use a manual chair with some support in some settings but does not have the independence he has with his power chair. Jordan would love to play sports but has to have transportation to and from practice and related events, so for now he is just one of the team’s biggest fans. The family has explored many resources but a used accessible van will likely cost over $23,000 with cheapest options for lifts and supports and that just is not affordable for the small family on a fixed income.
Life changing
Jordan is very social. He wants to and would love to do everything his peers do. He wants to get his license and be able to drive his accessible van. He wants to be able to go shopping, to doctors, sports practices, and drive himself to school. He dreams of joining a wheelchair sport team and wants to find after school employment. An accessible van would open up a world of possibilities for him. Living in the country is beautiful but it also means there isn’t always a lot of resources close by and everything is a bit of a drive. There aren’t any sidewalks, charging stations, or public transportation for him to use currently anywhere near his home. He is about 30 min for town by vehicle.
