Blair Calvo went for her annual check up with labs on February 14th, 2024, and went on about her day. Shortly after, she received a call from the doctor’s office telling her that she needed to go to the emergency room immediately. It was a matter of life and death.
She didn’t know it at the time, but her liver and kidneys were shutting down. She got to the hospital and they admitted her immediately. As they went about trying to determine what caused it, they realized she needed a transplant immediately. They did not think she would survive the night. Luckily, she’s pretty stubborn and strong willed so she was holding on for dear life. Literally.
As the weeks progressed, they started the process to determine if she would be a viable candidate to be on the transplant list, which is brutal. That process alone was very invasive for her. By the end of the second week in the hospital, she was still declining. With God’s grace and a little luck, on February 29th, 2024, she was approved and placed on the transplant list. Three days later, she was blessed with a new liver.
So far, she has been blessed with her recovery. She was released from the hospital March 15th, 2024. She is working to live each day to the fullest and to make sure she is doing her absolute best to take care of this new liver. Which she has lovingly dubbed “Valentine” since that is the day that everything changed.
She is being monitored very closely right now, by a fantastic team of care professionals at Integris Baptist, to make sure that “Valentine” is going to be accepted into her organ “family” and not rejected.
The average liver transplant costs are very expensive. Even with insurance, which will cover a portion of the transplant costs, she still faces significant expenses related to the surgery. For the rest of her life, she will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications, which are as critical to her survival as the transplant itself.
I say all of this so that you know just how tremendous your donations play a role in her life. Being on leave from work, without pay, donations given through Help Hope Live allow her to cover costs for medications, tests, procedures, hospitalizations, along with travel and lodging for out of state medical care (for her and her caregiver) when needed. Your donations will be a vital part to her being able to see the best quality of care and will help to extend her life substantially.
Blair has chosen to fundraise for Help Hope Live in part because Help Hope Live assures fiscal accountability of funds raised and tax deductibility for contributors. Contributors can be sure donations will be used to pay or reimburse medical and related expenses. To make a tax-deductible donation to this fundraising campaign, click on the GIVE button. And please share her page on your social media platforms and ask your friends and family to do so as well. Every donation helps.
