Garry’s story began when he noticed the troubling symptoms of shortness of breath and a diminishing ability to walk. It was a concern that he couldn’t ignore, and with the unwavering support of his daughter, he took the crucial step of seeking medical attention. Their journey led them to the renowned Mayo Clinic, where after a week of rigorous testing, Garry received a diagnosis that would change his life forever – interstitial lung disease.
For over 40 years, Garry had been a dedicated carpenter, working tirelessly in the construction industry. The doctors suspected that the particles he encountered during his career may have contributed to his condition, especially since Garry has never been a smoker and there is no history of this diagnosis in his family. As he stood at the crossroads of this life-altering diagnosis, he was faced with the challenge of transitioning to life on oxygen.
Garry’s daughter, living in Indianapolis, embarked on a mission to find the best transplant center for her father. Her unwavering dedication led them to Grand Rapids, where Garry spent most of the summer of 2023 undergoing intensive testing and preparation for a double lung transplant. He has diligently attended to his vision and dental care in anticipation of this critical procedure and is now on the transplant waiting list.
Unfortunately, Gary’s double-lung transplant comes at a very high cost.
The average double-lung transplant costs over $1 million. Even with the support of health insurance, Gary still faces significant medical expenses following his transplant. Garry’s journey now hinges on the call that will bring hope and new life – the call for his long-awaited double-lung transplant. However, the challenges he faces do not end there. The first three months post-transplant will likely require a temporary relocation to be closer to his medical team. The toll on his condition has been immense. Garry yearns to see his grandchildren but is unable to travel. He has had to bid farewell to his lifelong career, facing an early retirement due to his health. His diet has been significantly altered, and his daily activities are now limited, preventing him from doing the things he once loved.
Your generous contributions can alleviate the financial burden Gary and his family face due to mounting medical expenses, the demands of relocation, and the loss of income. Your support can ensure that Garry’s focus remains on healing, and he can soon breathe freely, unhooked from the constraints of oxygen.
Garry’s resilience and optimism are a testament to the strength of the human spirit. He looks forward to regaining his independence, traveling to see his daughters and grandchildren, and enjoying the simple pleasures of life he has been missing since his diagnosis.
