Jim and I will have been married for 29 years this July. In December 2019, he was diagnosed with liver disease. He stopped drinking and worked hard to get better, but his condition deteriorated, regardless. He loves our dogs, family, playing games, working on electronic inventions, programming Linux systems, planning our dream house, and hopes to go camping in our beautiful Northwest mountains. But he needs a new liver to realize those dreams. Please help if you can. Or just reach out and say hello.
James has chosen to fundraise for Help Hope Live in part because Help Hope Live assures fiscal accountability of funds raised and tax deductibility for contributors. Contributors can be sure donations will be used to pay or reimburse medical and related expenses. To make a tax-deductible donation to this fundraising campaign, click on the Give button.

Weeeheeee! We got back to Bremerton two weeks ago and we've been wrestling other problems and lost paperwork ever since, but we got a bunches of stuff nailed down, so things are smoothing out and all of you are SO APPRECIATED. Richie is talking about possibly taking some classes in the near future, since he's always wanted to complete an Electronic Engineering degree with an emphasis in antenna design, which I think would be a great idea both for his brain and his confidence. He's a Math-guy and he's worked with antenna design before, but never had the degree. I'm thrilled he's got the energy and drive to look further ahead and start making plans.
I've got a new book—Storm Waters—coming out in November and I'm hoping it'll do well enough for the publisher to want to do a second one. And I'm still hoping someone with the clout will decide they love Greywalker or Blood Orbit (or maybe Storm Waters, too) so much that they want to make a movie or something, but I never count on that kind of luck. I'm so pleased to see my husband start throwing off the depressing and scary effects of liver disease. My sweetie is back!
Heading Home! After 3 months of twice-weekly clinic dates and a few small emergencies, we're heading home today. Farewell to Transplant House and the lovely Ravenna neighborhood. Hello happy little trailer in the woods.
Things got a little crazy last week and Himself wasn't discharged until Wednesday. It's been wildly busy in between periods of exhaustion and bouts of good and bad temper on both our parts. We're now in our temporary digs in Seattle and will probably be here the expected 11.5 more weeks.
Our temporary apartment is cute, but a little echo-y due to the hard floors (easier to keep sanitary!) and the minimal furniture (also easier to clean and to move around when your mobility is lousy.) But the neighborhood is delightful and everyone is very nice. Looking forward to each day of improvement.
Richie/Jim will be discharged from the hospital Monday! I'm packing like mad for our temporary move to transitional housing for a while. So much to do! I can't wait for him to be up and about, even if he has to be very careful of his health and stamina for a few months. He's itching to get back into the kitchen! I'm just excited to have him "home" even if home is a temporary apartment. Still a lot of work to do, but we're both so grateful to everyone who's helped us make it this far along the path.
On Tuesday, we got the news of a potential transplant organ. Tuesday evening the Transplant staff confirmed that Richie was the right match and surgery was scheduled for first thing on Wednesday. Everything went very well and as of 10PM Wednesday, he was in ICU for his first phase of recovery! We are totally amazed at the speed with which this journey reached such a long-hoped-for milestone. There's still more to come with recovery, adjustment to his new liver, and the MAJOR changes in both our lives, but we have wonderful friends and family supporting us, even though there's still a lot of road to cover.
We're so grateful to the family of the donor whose selflessness has given Richie a chance for a longer, healthier life as the custodian of this precious gift. We extend our condolences for the loss of their loved one along with heartfelt thanks.
Jim was moved to the University of Washington Medical Center today. Not sure if he'll be there until transplant or be home for a while first, but it's a good move and we both feel relieved that he's in the hands of his specialists for a while.
Utterly bowled over by response from all of you. Thank you so much. We've been told Mr Kat will be transferred to UW soon, so... more Adventures in Transplant Land coming soon!
