Despite beginning his life with a diagnosis of Neurofibromatosis (NF1), Zac Krohn was an endearing, happy, giggly, and fun-loving child ready to crease us all up with his contagious belly-laugh. His whole family enjoyed his “kooky-ness”. For his parents and sibs, however, this was also punctuated with constant anxiety as Zac broke his right tibia 6 or 7 times, (we lost count) and faced possible extreme surgeries requiring 6-9 months of recovery, even possible amputation. At the tender time of adolescence, when the possibility of social exclusion can be so devastating, Zac developed a great many NF tumors both, inside his body and more visibly on the surface of his skin. Eight years ago, despite multiple reassurances from his docs, Zac kept feeling that something else was going on to cause him to feel so chronically unwell. Four years ago, his suspicions were validated as test results determined that Zac had Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis (PPMS). This type of MS, as the name implies, means a steady loss of many of the functions which we take for granted in our daily lives. Without needing to elaborate further, the Hope we have in requesting Help from our community is to fund a costly, even used, accessible vehicle. This has become necessary as Zac’s ability to transfer from his wheelchair to a car for medical appointments and to avoid social isolation is increasingly putting him at risk. This is largely due to an increase in his spasticity which causes him to suddenly experience intense spasms, which make him so rigid that his legs will not bend even with help from others. Out of an abundance of caution, and to prevent serious injury, Zac has felt a need in the past to stay within the confines of home which has resulted in greater social isolation. An accessible van specifically designed with a wheelchair ramp will help to free him from this limitation and will eventually be necessary when he transitions to using a power wheelchair. Please understand that it is not easy for Zac, or for us, to reach out to you in this way. Your donation will be tax-deductible as the HelpHopeLive organization is a 501 c 3 non-profit especially selected by us as it exclusively funds medically necessary equipment and procedures. Peter and Beth Krohn (Zac’s parents) have been able to set aside $20,000 each towards an accessible van. We are hoping that the last $20,000 can come from our family and communities. Any and all donations will be deeply appreciated, whether large or small. Every dollar will help. Whether you are in a position to offer a donation or not, you may wish to add your emotional support in Zac’s guestbook below. Many thanks to you, our village of family and dear friends.
Thanks to your wonderful support, my family has been able to purchase a van that will last me long into the future. In addition to monetary assistance, it was wonderful to feel your support. I have reconnected with multiple people from my past and appreciate all the wonderful messages on my guestbook. I am very grateful to everyone who helped make this happen, it’s wonderful to know how much support I have. I am keeping my fundraiser open as a place I can receive donations for the teaching I’ve been doing. Going forward, the donations will be used for other medical equipment such as an electronic lift or possible expenses related to the van.
Dear friends, family, and community. I am truly overwhelmed by the response we’ve had so far. When we started this campaign, I was well aware that fundraising can be a slow process. Some people advised us it could take over a year to hit our goal. I have so much appreciation for every single one of you. Community is incredibly powerful and I continue to see the depth of it. Sending lots of love and gratitude.
Zac has dedicated himself to giving to others by offering kindness, empathy and emotional support through his peer counseling for MS and spinal chord injured folks and teaching an online Zoom class at his Buddhist sangha for disabled and chronically ill people.
