Hi, my name is Dee Schoburgh. On May 20,2022 I was in the process of graduating from medical school in approximately 1 year. It was the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, and I was looking into exemption options, so I did not lose my job. I went to an integrative center, and they offered me the opportunity to have a blood test drawn that will tell me if I have antibodies for COVID-19. The blood test was completed and my kidney tests showed slight elevation. I was not concerned because I recently had a physical completed and everything appeared to be normal. I decided to have labs completed and my kidney values had significantly increased. I was experiencing periods of hypertension but nothing dramatic and my pressure would return to normal. I thought it was just a fluke, but my values continued to get worse and worse. Within two weeks, I was in the emergency room, couldn’t breathe, with test pains, and had difficulty walking. I had to have a port placed in my chest for emergency dialysis. Even though these symptoms were present, I continued to go to work and did not think anything of it; I thought these symptoms would be resolved. Breathing became more difficult and before I knew it, I was in the emergency room and diagnosed with congestive heart failure and kidney failure. The doctors placed an emergency port in my chest and started to give me dialysis while in the hospital. The congestive heart failure has resolved but I need a kidney transplant to regain my quality of life. As it stands, I continue to pursue my education and continue to work. I have always been an independent individual because of my limited family and have not come across the opportunity to marry or have children. To ask for a kidney is to ask for life. While I continue to attend school and work, I ask for your generosity and support. With this comes financial barriers and any support will be greatly appreciated.
