Danette May is a 41 year old wife, daughter, sister, aunt and friend. She and her husband Brandon have four “children”: their two dogs (Sasha and Montana) and two cats (Sixx and Sindee). Danette was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at age 12 and has been insulin dependent ever since. In 1998 Danette began seeing a nephrologist for kidney-related issues and entered end-stage renal failure in 2010. Danette bravely faces other complications of her Type 1 Diabetes however her biggest challenge has been the kidney failure and the resulting need for dialysis.
Despite the daily struggles with her health and constant fatigue, Danette has managed to keep her full time job at a financial services company, as well as an extraordinary sense of humor. Anybody who spends time with Danette is sure to be entertained! It is the hope of all who know and love Danette that this transplant will restore energy and provide a fresh outlook to the life of this inspiring woman.
Danette has been approved for a kidney transplant and hopes to receive a Simultaneous Pancreas Kidney (SPK) transplant. The transplant will take place at the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, Arizona. While health insurance will pay for the majority of the costs related to the transplant surgery, Danette will be responsible for many other transplant related expenses. Her out-of-pocket expenses include co-pays and deductibles, travel and relocation at the time of the transplant and the costly immunosuppressant medications she will have to take for the rest of her life.Additionally, the extensive amount of time off from work the surgery requires will create a significant financial burden for Danette and her family.
To help offset these costs, a fundraising campaign in Danette’s honor has been set up with HelpHOPELive (formerly NTAF), a nonprofit organization that has been assisting the transplant community for nearly 30 years. All donations are tax-deductible, are held by HelpHOPELive in the Midwest/West Kidney/Pancreas Transplant Fund, and are administered by HelpHOPELive for transplant-related expenses only.
