Fundraiser Update: Harmony’s Journey - Celebrating Strength and ResilienceA huge THANK YOU goes out to everyone who has donated to our fundraiser so far. Our anonymous donor is still matching all donations, dollar for dollar until March 31st, 2025! Please spread the word, as we still have a significant need for equipment / services not covered by our insurance.February 19th, 2025 Update:Since our last post, Harmony celebrated her 41st birthday—a milestone filled with mixed emotions. As strong as she is, she is also human, and I have witnessed the waves of grief as she mourns the life she once knew, like simply standing in the sand, or taking casual walks around the neighborhood. Every day, she balances that loss with her determination to move forward, tackling rigorous physical and occupational therapy, doctor’s appointments, and everyday tasks that now require immense effort. Things many take for granted—putting on pants, getting out of bed, showering—are now victories in her journey toward independence. In January, Harmony reached a huge milestone: she successfully completed and passed the Shepherd Center’s driving clinic. They assessed her cognitive and physical ability to drive and provided hands-on training with hand controls. Her first lesson was tough—she barely hit 10 mph and her knuckles were bright red from squeezing the steering wheel so hard—but by the second lesson, she confidently navigated Peachtree Road and even took on I-75 from the driver’s seat of a specially equipped vehicle, all while seated in her power wheelchair. She has now been approved to drive on her own, but we are still facing challenges getting her Honda Element fully modified to her needs. The hydraulic system controlling the automatic doors and ramp has been malfunctioning, delaying the installation of her necessary hand controls. While we were fortunate to find a great deal on the vehicle, these repairs come at a significant cost—one we must overcome to give Harmony the freedom and independence she has worked so hard to regain. This month, we are also preparing for another major shift: my return to work in late March. However, with ongoing changes in the federal government, job security is uncertain, making this transition even more stressful. I am doing my best to not get consumed with what is being reported through the media and to remind myself often, that it's all in God's hands! While we navigate these unknowns, we are also working through major logistical and financial challenges, including securing at-home nursing care for Harmony, childcare, and reliable transportation for her therapy and doctor’s appointments, as well as getting the kids to and from school and extracurricular activities until she can safely and comfortably drive on her own. If anyone reading this update has any suggestions or can offer their assistance, please feel free to reach out to us. We are open to receiving help and/or advice.Even with all of these challenges, Harmony continues to persevere. She not only pushes forward in therapy but also manages the added strain of Lupus flares, requiring extra care for her immunocompromised body. Yet, despite it all, she still finds joy—smiling through victories, cherishing special moments, and celebrating milestones like her own birthday and Riley’s 11th.Your support, encouragement, and generosity mean the world to us. Every message, donation, and act of kindness lifts our family and fuels Harmony’s journey. Thank you for being part of our story and helping us take the next steps forward. With heartfelt gratitude,
