Family and friends of Patrick Carter are raising money for the nonprofit Help Hope Live to fund uninsured medical expenses associated with Transplant. Patrick has chosen to fundraise with Help Hope Live in part because donations are tax deductible for contributors and will only be used to cover medical and related expenses.
The transplant team says it appears the bleeding has stopped because the liver is starting to make clotting factors. White blood cell count is great. Hemoglobin stable at 8 and there is less blood in his drains.
He will move from the ICU to a different floor Monday because he is doing much better. He is waiting for the insurance approval and a bed for the LTAC floor.
Patrick walked all the way down the hall today! He had not taken steps in like a month and a half!
He was switched from continuous to intermittent dialysis and is tolerating it well.
Hopefully, speech therapy will complete the swallow test tomorrow. He cannot wait to eat! He keeps asking for ice, jolly ranchers and lollipops.
He is doing great and moving forward in the right direction! We are beyond grateful for the daily forward progress. Again, thank you everyone for your kind words, checking in and positive thoughts!
On 09/09/24 Patrick got a tracheostomy so the intubation could be removed. He had a minor set back on 09/14/24 and had to go back to the OR. The kidney team found a hematoma on the new kidney and had to go back in to do some clean up. After the procedure he had to restart weaning off the ventilator. Things are looking up!
On 09/03/24, Tuesday, Patrick had a successful liver transplant. The surgery was approximately 7 hours. Liz, my Dad and I got to see him for a few hours before the surgery and the wait was mind numbing!
On 09/04/24, Wednesday, Patrick had a successful kidney transplant. This surgery was approximately 6 hours. The liver team finished up some final touches on the bile duct and he returned to his room in the Liver ICU where he rested through the night.
On 09/05/24 we got to see him. He was still under sedation, but arousable and confused. He is still intubated, we are hoping for extubation in the next day or two. The respiratory team decreased the settings on the ventilator to allow him to do some breathing on his own. Later that evening I saw a rainbow! Rainbows symbolize hope, promise and new beginnings. There was also a rainbow the day his daughter, Amelia was born. I know it seems corny, but we will take all the positive signs we can get!
We all wanted to say thank you for all the texts, messages and calls offering moral support, prayers and positive vibes. Thank you for everyone that has donated. We now have enough to cover his private insurance deductible. We are still waiting on the pending disability application and were told it could take months to go through, if approved. Any funds donated go strictly to pay for his medical care and are tax deductible to anyone that owns their own business.
Patrick went to the hospital 07/07/24, the night before the hurricane. He was thought to have pneumonia and required to be intubated. He went into septic shock and was diagnosed with liver and kidney failure. He was transferred to the medical center for ICU placement the afternoon after the hurricane. It was heart breaking. To say his hospital stay was complicated is an understatement. He has been intubated 3 times. He continues to fight and stay strong. He will not survive without a liver and kidney transplant. As a family, we are raising funds to help pay for his surgeries, recovery, doctors appointments, medications and any services required to keep him alive and healthy. He has a long road of recovery in front of him. Any donation made is greatly appreciated and a tax write off. Please share this link!
