The day Emily was born she faced many challenges and quickly proved her strength and determination to overcome any obstacle that was put in her path. As she has grown, her resilience has continued to shine through with ongoing health challenges.
During infancy, Emily was diagnosed with an atypical seizure disorder. It was quickly evident on her MRI of her brain that she had abnormalities. Emily’s healthcare team were unsure how these abnormalities would impact her life overall. Despite many medications, trips to renowned institutions, and endless testing, Emily’s seizures progressed and changed with time.
Not only would Emily face the diagnosis of complex seizures, but we would soon find other medical diagnoses would be put in her path to overcome. Those diagnoses would prove to complicate life for her. Her most recent diagnosis of Autism has brought many difficult obstacles to overcome; however, with the help of friends, family members, an amazing healthcare team, and her school family, Emily has shown her strength and unwillingness to give up.
When Emily was a toddler, we quickly noticed an unusual relationship with all animals. She would be able to connect with animals in unique ways. On all her visits to the different hospitals, she was routinely visited by service animals. It was evident that the service dogs quickly turned things around for the better.
We saw a decrease in anxiety and fearfulness of not only hospitals but everyday activities. We saw an increase in her independence and interactions with others when the dog was present.
Emily has been accepted to Highland Canine Training in North Carolina for a service dog. The dog will be trained for autism and epilepsy. The dog will alert on Emily’s seizures any time of day and keep her safe during and after a seizure. For autism, the dog will be trained for deep pressure therapy to regulate behavior and emotions and allow Emily to integrate into her community. The service dog will be an invaluable addition to Emily’s team and an integral resource to keep Emily safe.
Although as difficult as this journey has been, we are thankful for what qualities and character traits Emily has gained and who she has become. Emily finds the beauty in the “broken,” whether a broken sea shell, the pet that has no home, or the messy art that looks like a masterpiece to her. We are honored to be her parents!
As we add a new chapter to our journey in life, we thank you for your support! There is no one else we would rather embark on this journey with other than Emily.
As we enter this campaign, let us remember to find the beauty in the broken! Our only request is for your prayers, encouraging words, and to live every day like Emily… happy, loving, strong, and free-spirited! You belong among the wildflowers my child!
We did it!! We have met our goal! All because of each and every one of YOU! From donations, words of encouragement, volunteering, and everything in between we thank you from the bottom of our hearts! I had no idea we would have this kind of support!! I talked to the company and it is looking like we will match in the fall! #teamEmily
Today Emily wrapped up her pay it forward project. She collected (donated and bought) dog supplies and made 15 baskets and will be giving them to her training institute to hand out. She made 5 baskets for search and rescue dogs, 5 baskets for service dogs and 5 baskets for police K-9s. Highland Canine Training trains many types of dogs including SAR, service and Police. Giving working dogs are near and dear to us (her pawpaw Bob Watson and I were SAR K-9 handlers), we are huge supporters of police and obviously can’t wait to be part of the service dog community, she picked those 3 types of dogs to support. She also made a card with a quote she came up with to correlate with each dog. These are deep quotes…….im so proud of her! This is a small glimpse of her big heart!! I’ll post pics of delivery soon. Until next time…………#teamEmily
Yesterday was our HUGE fundraiser, The Charity Challenge. It was a HUGE success! We raised $2575 towards our goal. We are blown away at the support we have had through this journey. Each shooter, worker, volunteer, family, spectator I want to send a personal Thank YOU! Yesterday was amazing and I was able to see that there is good in every single one of us! Pictures have been posted below and will continue to be posted as I get them in today. Although the website doesn't reflect it (some payments were made directly to the training institute) we are only $480 from our goal, because of YOU!Continue to follow us on Facebook to follow or journey! https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61568750752673&name=xhp_nt__fb__action__open_userMike, Shelley, Emily#teamEmily
This weekend we have The Charity Challenge coming up! Thank you to everyone who has registered! Your support has been amazing! We will have tons of gifts and raffles including guns (more than 1)! There is still time to register! I look forward to seeing everyone this weekend! #teamEmily
It has been a little while since I have posted. We were all decompressing from the holidays and now are ready to get up and running again on fundraising. Emily is in the process of getting her own fundraiser together: her idea, her plans and her behind the scenes hard work. She is doing an "adopt a service dog" fundraiser. This will have a table at our Charity Challenge Shooting Match in June. She has collected (and is still collecting) dog supplies like treats, toys, bowls, etc. to make baskets. She will let people pay to "adopt" a dog. The money goes to her fundraiser and the basket of supplies will go to a dog from her training institute, Highland Canine Training. She has chosen 5 service dogs, 5 police dogs and 5 search and rescue dogs to receive the baskets all from the training institute. What a great way to pay it forward. This is just a small glimpse of Emily's big heart and always thinking of others. If you would like to donate supplies please reach out to [email protected]. More to come on our Charity Challenge Shooting Match in June.

With the initial deposit placed on the dog and what we have raised so far we have reached the half-way point! That means we have raised 50%! We have gotten this far because every one of you have been so gracious to donate time and money to #teamEmily. We are so appreciative of every single dollar you have given and every minute of your time! We have been blown away by everyone's support! From Emily:"Thank you for helping us reach our half way point. I am excited to be closer to getting my dog to help me."Stay tuned as we post more updates as we go through this journey!#teamEmily #epilepsy #autism #servicedogMike, Shelley, Emily
WOW! I am blown away by everyone's support! This is amazing! We can't thank you enough!Check out Highland Canine Training where Emily's dog will be bred and trained. This amazing group of staff and trainers have been with us every step of the way! They have been amazing (Especially Deb)! Unfortunately, the wait for a service dog from acceptance to completion of training can be around a year. We are officially accepted and, on the list, so now the hard part is waiting! Check back for updates on this journey! #teamEmily #autism #epilepsy #servicedogshttps://highlandcanine.com/service-dogs/

I hope this helps to get you one step closer to having your service dog. Every year we like to donate to a cause for Christmas since we don't have children this year we happen to run in to Joel (a sro at foothills) at the gun range and he asked for a donation to be entered into a raffle. It just seemed like the universe was telling us that was our cause this year. We wish you and your family are Merry Christmas and a happy new year.
