Emily's Service Dog Journey

The day Emily was born she faced many challenges and quickly proved her strength and determination to overcome any obstacle that was put in her path. As she has grown, her resilience has continued to shine through with ongoing health challenges.

During infancy, Emily was diagnosed with an atypical seizure disorder. It was quickly evident on her MRI of her brain that she had abnormalities. Emily’s healthcare team were unsure how these abnormalities would impact her life overall. Despite many medications, trips to renowned institutions, and endless testing, Emily’s seizures progressed and changed with time.

Today was one of the biggest days we’ve been waiting for in this long journey…..match day! Emily and I went to the training facility today to meet 2 candidates for her. Although both were very special and easy to love, one in particular was an instant match. The look on Emily’s face and the dog when they met was an instant connection. the trainers said they saw an instant change in Emily’s demeanor when the dog walked in Since day 1 in this journey Emily has said she wanted a white lab. The trainers told us that is nearly impossible to get but they called a few weeks ago and said they had 2 dogs and it was Emily’s turn to match. Well one happened to be a white lab, from a working dog litter in Texas, that looked just like our old dog, Bunker, who passed away a few years ago. This dog was meant to be. Emily has named her Tundra! Tundra will be at the training center until November when she will come to her forever home with Emily. Emily has learned a valuable lesson in patience and sees how it pays off when you wait for things to align. Look in the gallery for the picture of Emily and Tundra.Until next time………

I know it has been forever since I have posted but this is the watch and wait process. We were told up front the process would take 1-2 years so we fully expected this wait. I just wanted everyone to know that. Emily was able to see several dogs at the training facility. We are hoping this summer we will match. We are fortunate that with a new diagnosis for Emily the dog will be able to assist with that as well, so we are seeing more and more of the benefit of Emily having a service dog.She was also able to drop off her service dog baskets she made with collected items for police dogs, service dogs and search and rescue dogs. I will post pictures. For now we will continue to anxiously wait.
