It was only a year and a half into our marriage and after a series of struggles and emotional setbacks, our lives finally seemed to be coming together the way we hoped. I was 6 months pregnant and were about to start looking for our first house. Then suddenly everything changed. In 2017, my husband Aaron was hospitalized for pneumonia and sepsis, was rushed into emergency surgery and put into a medically induced coma. I was told by the doctor that if he made through to the morning, he would most likely survive. It was the longest and most terrifying night of my life. Thankfully he did survive that long night, but little did we know that it was only the beginning.
Aaron was diagnosed with Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis, a reoccurring liver disease that he had survived once before after his first liver transplant in 1989, when he was just 4 years old. We were told he would eventually need another transplant, but he would have to wait until he was basically on his deathbed before he could receive it.
Over the years his disease slowly progressed but he was never put on the transplant list because his illness wasn’t critical enough. We grew more anxious with each passing year, with each new or worsening symptom. How long would we have to wait and how bad would it get before he was “sick enough” to get his transplant? We were also experiencing bouts of serious financial hardship and went into debt just trying to survive. Aaron required excellent health insurance just to cover his expensive medications, but it still wasn’t enough to cover his regular procedures, diagnostics, and frequent specialists visits, and so the medical bills began piling up. It seemed that the constant stress that had become our lives would never cease.
When last year, following a couple of particularly rough hospitalizations, we were told he was eligible for a live donor transplant. This was amazing news because that meant he could get his surgery as soon as we found the right donor and while he was still healthy enough to undergo such a massive surgery! Fast forward to a year later, we now have 2 potential donors and an expected timeframe of a few months until his surgery. We have come so far and experienced so much during this difficult journey, but Aaron has remained strong and surprisingly healthy throughout this journey. Since this will be the first expected hospitalization, we are trying to minimize the stress by preparing for his surgery and long recovery period. The past 8 years have shown us that financial difficulties are one of the most stressful aspects of Aaron’s complicated health journey. This is why we are starting a fundraising campaign with Help Hope Live to help us cover the expenses that insurance does not cover. If you are able, please make a donation and share this page with your community.
Thank you and we appreciate you your support!
Thanksgiving 2025 UpdateAaron and I spent a relaxing Thanksgiving in the hospital together and its the first time in a long while that Aaron has really felt like himself — teasing me, joking with the nurses, and filling the room with the personality we’ve all missed. These small signs of strength mean everything.Since Aaron’s difficult diagnosis 9 years ago, we never really allowed ourselves to think beyond his transplant because we felt like it may never happen. Now that it has happened we find ourselves in uncharted territory: what will our lives look like without this disease plaguing us each day? I was pregnant with Moira when we received Aaron’s diagnosis, so our daughter has never known her father healthy. We have never had the opportunity to experience being a young family without this constant, and very real fear hanging over us. We are so grateful for the future our family now has and even more thankful for Aaron’s sister, Missy and her sacrifice that allowed this future to be possible.Aaron’s recovery will be long and difficult, but just 10 days after his transplant, and despite some complications, his liver function and overall health have already significantly improved.
One Week Post-Transplant UpdateIt's been a week since my husband Aaron received his much-needed liver transplant. Unfortunately, there were some unexpected complications during the surgery that have made his recovery more challenging, but we're happy to report that the worst is behind us now.Aaron is currently doing remarkably well. He was moved out of the ICU sooner than expected, and his progress has been nothing short of amazing. He's eating regular food, walking around on his own, and taking fewer medicines than he has in years. His lab results are steadily improving in all the right directions, and his body is adapting to the new liver faster than expected—surpassing even what his medical team anticipated. The healing from both the transplant and the complications is happening remarkably quickly, and we are beyond grateful. We also want the world to know about an extraordinary act of love: Aaron’s sister Melissa. She didn’t just step up—she gave 68% of her liver so her brother could live. Her courage, strength, and selflessness saved Aaron’s life so he can be here for our daughter and our family. Missy—you are a hero in every sense of the word. Our hearts will never have enough words to thank you. These past nine years have been one long storm—but today, we’re finally catching our breath on the other side. It still doesn’t feel real. We’ll share more about Aaron’s journey through surgery and recovery soon—we just wanted everyone who’s been holding us up with love and support to know: your prayers, messages, and kindness carried us through this overwhelming time. From the bottom of our hearts… thank you.
Thank you for everyone’s generous contributions for our campaign over the past year. The kindness and generosity shown to us by friends, family, even people we’ve never met has meant the world to us during this difficult time.Just to give everyone an update—today is the day we’ve been anticipating for quite some time. Right now, we’re still waiting for the surgery to be completed, but we’re in great spirits as everything has gone smoothly so far. Although the surgery is nearly finished, we know there is still a long road ahead in recovery. If you’re able to help by making a tax-deductible donation in Aaron's honor or just share this post, we would truly appreciate it. Once again, thank you all so much for your support. We can’t wait to share more updates on Aaron’s progress.
