My name is Isabel Springer, although most people know me as Isy or Bella. I’m a 31-year-old living with severe Long-COVID after contracting COVID-19 at a conference in the UK in the summer of 2023. In just a short time, this illness has dramatically changed my life. I am now wheelchair-dependent, and everyday tasks have become impossible. I face significant out-of-pocket expenses for experimental therapies, mobility aids, and necessary modifications to my home and car. Without these supports – especially a proper custom wheelchair – I won’t be able to live independently.
Although my diagnosis is a major part of my life now, it doesn’t define who I am. Before I got sick, I was always on the go: working, traveling, exploring new places, and going on adventures with the wonderful people I get to call my friends. We would meet up and try new restaurants, go to the opera or ballet, and have game nights. I also loved arts and crafts, singing, writing, reading, and dancing – ideally in the company of the people I love! At home, my cat, Kovu, never fails to bring me joy with his playful antics and cuddles; he’s been a constant companion through it all. Professionally, I’m a mental health therapist who loves tending to my clients. I also work in academia and was hoping to receive my Ph.D. soon. I miss being able to work on my dissertation, my research, and teaching at the university. I used to serve on committees, attend conferences, give presentations and was an active member of honor societies and professional organizations.
Now, Long-COVID keeps me confined to bed 23 hours a day, only getting up to eat. I only leave the house every few weeks, and only for medical appointments. This drastic change has forced me to step away from all the personal and professional activities I once thrived on. I miss being active, social, and engaged in my community. I hope to reclaim some of that independence – enabling me to rejoin the world I love and continue making a positive impact as both a professional and a friend.
My Long-COVID symptoms have left me unable to do the everyday tasks I once took for granted. Most days, I can’t even sit up long enough to work on my computer, and I can no longer walk around my own home. I can’t even hold a book. Simple activities (like preparing meals or performing basic chores) are out of reach, and I rely on others to help me with these daily necessities. My chronic fatigue is so debilitating that I’m unable to see friends. Leaving my home requires several days or even weeks of recovery. As someone who was once very active, losing this much independence has been life-altering, but I’m so thankful for the love and support of my family and friends (and Kovu), who all give so much to help me cope and keep my spirits up.
I’m incredibly grateful for any support since the costs associated with my care are staggering. A wheelchair alone costs roughly $12,000, and insurance covers only part of the cost. An accessible vehicle, essential for me to get around, costs around $60,000. I also need funds for care services, like help with meals and laundry, as well as ongoing out-of-pocket expenses such as co-pays, medications, and experimental therapies. These off-label treatments can easily total over $100,000. Recently, I installed ramps in my home, which cost $1,000, and each pill of an experimental medication is $1, adding up quickly since I take nine of those pills a day. I even tried a new therapy that cost $250 every day, but sadly, it failed to help. All of these expenses combine to make daily life more and more difficult.
With your support, I’m hopeful that my life can drastically improve. With my current goal of $10,000, I hope to cover some of the cost of a custom wheelchair, and if we can raise even more funds, I hope to be able to invest in an accessible vehicle and pursue Apheresis which isn’t covered by insurance (Apheresis is a therapy that filters out remnants of the virus). Perhaps I can even regain my independence or at least enough to leave the house to see my friends and family. I dream of traveling, hiking, and dancing again, returning to the vibrant life I once had. I’m eager to finish my dissertation, return to my patients and students, work on building accessible mental health counseling programs for universities worldwide, and help offer mental health care services for those in marginalized communities. By helping me reclaim my mobility, you will enable me to give back meaningfully, making a lasting difference for people in need of mental health support.
If you’re able to contribute, please know that every donation makes a real impact – no matter the size. By donating to Help Hope Live in my honor and sharing my story, you can help me afford the treatments, equipment, and services I desperately need. If you’d like to go a step further and organize a fundraising event, please contact me at [email protected], and I’ll connect you with the amazing people around me who are ready to help plan and support these efforts. Thank you for reading my story and for any assistance you can offer. I hope that we can take meaningful steps toward restoring my health, mobility, and independence.
TL;DR: I’m a 31-year-old living with severe Long-COVID, stuck in bed most of the time and unable to perform daily tasks on my own. With a wheelchair, home modifications, and access to off-label treatments not covered by insurance, I hope to regain my independence and return to the active life I love: traveling, dancing, seeing friends, and continuing my work as a mental health therapist. Your support will help cover medical expenses, specialized equipment, and crucial care services that can bring me one step closer to reclaiming my future. Any contribution, big or small, makes a meaningful difference.
After 9 long months of fighting with insurance, raising money, and advocating nonstop (by my amazing mother!), my perfect chariot has finally arrived - and it feels like home! This chair wouldn’t have been possible without the generosity and love of so many people. Because of your donations, shares, organizing, and encouragement, I can now finally travel to Europe for treatment and be with my family. This is life-changing.From the bottom of my heart, a huge thank you to every single person who donated, shared, supported, and stood by me through this part of my journey! Now on to treatment! Chair Force One and I are ready for take-off. If you'd like to help me cover costs for treatment, please consider donating!
We have reached $10,000!!! Thanks to each and every one of you who donated, shared, and spread the word! I am truly overwhelmed and so deeply grateful! From the bottom of my heart, thank you! Because of your incredible support, my wheelchair is now mostly covered, something that I thought would take years to achieve. With this milestone reached, I'm setting a stretch goal of $20,000 to help me take the next step in my recovery: apheresis treatment. Apharesis has shown promise for people with long-COVID by helping calm the overactive immune and clotting systems that can cause many of the symptoms. It's not yet widely available in the U.S. and can be extremely expensive here, but a 6-week treatment course in Germany, where it is more accessible and affordable, costs around $30,000. My goal now is to begin putting funds toward this treatment, which could be life-changing. Thank you again for walking this journey with me. Every donation, share, and kind word is helping me reclaim my life. With all my gratitude, Isabel.
Hi everyone!I’ve heard back from the wonderful team at National Seating & Mobility. They have been helping me navigate the process of getting me a custom wheelchair. Unfortunately, UnitedHealthcare has denied my request for a wheelchair, stating it's too expensive. We’re in the process of resubmitting the claim, but I’ll be honest: I’m not feeling very hopeful. That said, I want to send a huge thank you to everyone who has donated or shared this campaign so far. Your support, kindness, and generosity mean more than I can put into words. It’s been such a source of strength during this incredibly frustrating process. Thank you for standing with me. Sincerely, Isabel Springer

Hi Bella! I miss you so much it\'s crazy. I understand that even the thought of socializing is probably painful and draining, though I hope to see you again. Maybe I could help with household chores or shopping sometime - anything to help. You\'re an amazing friend and Long COVID doesn\'t stand a chance against you!
