My name is Nicole, and I was diagnosed with a rare form of muscular dystrophy in 2023. While this condition has caused muscle weakness and changed the way I do things, it hasn’t stopped me from living life to the fullest. I believe that if you can do something you love, you should do it—and that’s exactly what I strive for every day. I am passionate about my work with children, dancing, adaptive sports, being outdoors, and spending time with family and friends. This past year, despite my muscles weakening, I’ve continued finding ways to stay active, including performing in my first-ever dance recital with Move Inclusive Dance—a huge milestone that meant so much to me.
To support my mobility, I use braces and assistive devices, and I’m now in the process of training to drive using hand controls. However, my current vehicle does not meet my needs, and I need an accessible wheelchair van to maintain my independence and continue doing the things I love. I’ve been working with Mobility Works to find a van that can be adapted with the necessary features, but the cost of an accessible van is significant—averaging around **$50,000**. I am fundraising to help cover the cost of the van as well as ongoing medical expenses related to my mobility needs. Having this van will be life-changing for me. It will allow me to get to work, stay active in my community, and continue participating in the activities that bring me joy. It will also give me the freedom to go places without relying on others for transportation.
How You Can Help:
Please consider donating today to help me reach my goal! Every contribution, no matter the size, brings me closer to gaining the independence I need. You can also help by sharing my story with others who might be willing to support my journey. Thank you for your kindness, generosity, and belief in my ability to keep moving forward!
Family and friends of Nicole Sanders are raising money for the nonprofit Help Hope Live to fund uninsured medical expenses associated with a Catastrophic Illness. Nicole has chosen to fundraise with Help Hope Live in part because donations are tax deductible for contributors and will only be used to cover medical and related expenses.
I’m traveling to Iowa twice a year for medical care and my second trip this year is coming up soon.
I traveled in April to participate in a natural history study with the Muscular Dystrophy Clinic in Iowa. They’ve been studying the specific gene (GMPPB) responsible for the muscular dystrophy. It was a fantastic trip and I learned new information and started a medication to reduce the muscle fatigue.
