Family and friends of Jerry Lyman are raising money for the nonprofit Help Hope Live to fund uninsured medical expenses associated with his catastrophic injury.
Friday January 3rd began like any other for him, but progressed with a headache. Jerry assumed he was getting sick, and as he began vomiting Saturday, he was sure of it.
Come Tuesday, his brother had to bathe him and brush his teeth.
An emergency room visit led to a pretty quick CT scan where it was discovered that Jerry had suffered a “massive” bleed in his brain, resulting in emergency brain surgery. He was immediately intubated, and words like “IF he makes it to surgery” and “IF he makes it THROUGH surgery” hung in the air and tore at the hearts of Jerry’s loved ones. At the time of this writing, it has been 7 weeks since this event.
Days after surgery it was recommended Jerry be moved to Northwestern for top tier care for his conditions. The road has been bumpy. Jerry has fought and conquered pneumonia. Twice. He acquired a blood infection with his last bout of pneumonia. He suffered bleeds in other places and has kept most everyone on the edge of their seats. Many sleepy, less-responsive days kept everyone worried sick. At one point, family was told that he “would not make it out of this hospital…” But, he is a fighter. At only 36 years old, he has the gift of his youth on his side. His eyes have become more vibrant and he has been communicative with head nods of yes and no, and is able to actively move his right arm/hand and foot/toes. Jerry’s family and friends are hopeful with these progressions, and are constantly by his side. We are optimistically looking forward to see him achieve his goals and hopefully, sooner than later, be moved to a rehab facility.
Jerry faces a very lengthy road to recovery as he is cared for by the very best with Northwestern’s staff. Please donate to Help Hope Live in Jerry’s honor. Share with your friends and family. Any little bit, alongside your amazing thoughts and prayers, can help Jerry and his family with his ongoing medical expenses as he continues to navigate his unfathomable health setback. Thank you so much for your generous support.
Hello everyone. I cannot thank you all enough for the donations this campaign has brought in. We are preparing for Jerry's arrival home one week from today! He is trying his best to come home with as much walking strength and balance that he can. Yesterday I was trained on moving him around and how to take care of his trach.
Hello friends! We are happy to report that Jerry continues to make improvements and remains at the long term acute care facility. He isn't yet able to get up and move about without heavy assistance .He has physical therapy throughout the week, which HAS included being wheeled to the end of the hallway so as to WALK back to his room!!!! His left vocal cord is paralyzed, so he remains a bit raspy but IS able to talk. His left arm is playing a bit of catch-up but he continues to do whatever exercises he can while resting to bring it back.Every visit usually has us in stitches, laughing until we cry. And for this we all are so VERY grateful. Because THAT is what is typical when we are all together. ❤️Thank you for your continued support, love and prayers!
Jerry is still trending in the right direction!! He has been eating on his own and the tube feeding has only been on at night while he sleeps. His platelets continue to climb, lowering the chance of this happening again. He has been doing his best to talk while the trach is capped. He has access to his iPad and has been texting with the family, which is SO VERY special to us all. ♥️He could be officially removed from tube feeding quite soon, and will also be moved to the rehab facility in the coming week, fingers crossed! Please continue to keep him and our family in your thoughts and prayers as we move forward with the next steps in his healing. Thank you all!
Hello to all our dear friends and family. A little update on our guy Jerry. He is doing SO VERY WELL as of late!!!!!They capped his trach the other day, which allows him to breath through his nose or mouth like normal, cough through his mouth normally, and he even got to EAT. REAL. FOOD. and DRINK.Jerry has full use of his right side of body, and was able to feed himself ice chips! His left side seems to be waking up a bit. With his trach capped, he is able to "whisper" talk to us, but it requires much effort. However, hearing our Jer say ANYTHING in ANY way is an absolute MIRACLE!!!! Mom, brother Joe and sister Steph got to be with him for all of these firsts, and we couldn't be more hopeful and excited!Thank you to everyone for your continued support, love and prayers. Jerry is also overwhelmed with all of the love, please keep it coming!!!! ❤️
