I am writing this letter on behalf of my husband Mahlon Beers, Jr. who is in need of a double lung transplant. Thirty years ago, he was diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). He is now in stage four lung disease and is on oxygen 24/7. Mahlon has also been diagnosed with a rare liver disease, alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency in 2012. He has been hospitalized several times for lung infections and pneumonia. At his last visit with his pulmonologist he was informed that nothing could be done for his breathing problems and that he was a candidate for a double lung transplant. This is the only thing left that they can do for him. Mahlon was evaluated at Duke University Medical Center in North Carolina. The financial coordinator suggested that Mahlon fundraise for the many pre-and post-transplant related expenses that are not covered by insurance.
To help with these uninsured expenses, a fundraising campaign in Mahlon’s honor has been established with HelpHOPELive, a nonprofit organization that has been assisting the transplant community for 30 years. All donations are tax-deductible, are held by HelpHOPELive in the South-Atlantic Lung Transplant Fund, and are administered by HelpHOPELive for transplant-related expenses only.

Mahlon has a very long journey ahead of him and considers his opportunity of a transplant as a gift from God. Your financial gifts as well as your prayers will be greatly appreciated, and will help us through this difficult time.
With sincere gratitude,
Gail Beers
Duke has sent me a letter stating that they have stopped my evaluation with them. They gave me a reason of not being a good candidate at this time.
I went to MUSC (Medical University of South Carolina) for a pre-evaluation to get another opinion. I will be working with them and their doctors and hope that a double lung transplant is in the future.
Since the new health care laws were put into affect I have lost some medical benefits. This has put a bigger financial burden on me and my family. All donations are greatly appreciated and many thanks for your generous gifts.
The transplant coordinator from Duke Hospital called me today. She told me my case went in front of the board and they decided to have me keep working on my list of things that is required for them to put me on the list. Going back again in a month for the swallow taste the doctor ordered. Until then, exercise, gain weight, nicotine cessation classes, wean off some present medications I am on, and finances. I am going to be so busy for quite a while. Prayers going out to all, and God bless. Donations are so helpful so please check in and sign my gust book and send prayers, and words of hope. Thank you.
Appointment at Duke on Feb. 27, 2014 went better than expected. When my daughter and I met with the doctor the news was not what we thought we would be told. He said to gain weight and go to pulmonary rehab. He also wants to do a test because of my problem with swallowing, food gets stuck in my throat. The last swallow test revealed an inlet patch in my esophagus. He wants to make sure this will not be an issue with food going down the wrong tube and into the lungs, for that can damage them. If the test results are okay I will be told to move onto the next step of the process. If the results reveal some issues then my chances of getting the transplant will not happen. The decision on moving forward depend on the swallow test.
The pulmonary function part of the test showed that my blood gas level is up. That is do to when I am very short of breath I turn up the oxygen. In my case I do not need more. My problem is that I can't expel the air in the lungs. Getting to much air in the lungs causes blood gas levels to rise, which causes oxygen toxicity. I need to monitor my oxygen saturation level. I was also told that the need to be on oxygen all the time is also causing my blood gas levels to rise. In my case I just need oxygen when the saturation level drops below 89%. When I did the 6 minute walk part of the test I almost went the the required distance. I walked 918 feet out of the required 1000 feet.in six minutes. I have been sick with an infection (sinus) and getting around is difficult. That will get better with slowly exercising and getting in better physical shape.
My goal is to work towards getting back into pulmonary rehab, monitoring oxygen saturation levels, not using as much oxygen then I have been, gaining weight, and continue to do fundraising. There is so much I have to do and with the support of my family, friends, and any donations is making it easier on me. Please continue praying for me and my family in our time of much needed help. I look forward to seeing words of encouragement in the Guest Book sign in section, so please sign in. To sum this all up, thanks, God bless, and prayers for all.

Feb. 16, 2014....... It is ten days till my visit to Duke Hospital for a follow up visit. I hope it it good news. Thank you for your donations, I can't express how grateful I am for the caring people that are helping me and my family. God Bless
Thank you Evelyn for your donation and support. Every little bit helps, even if it is just words of encouragement. It is great to see that people do care and are willing to give to a person in need. You are a very special person, and again, thank you so much.
Going back to Duke on February 27, 2014 for another follow and pulmonary function test. At the present time I am not even close to the ten thousand dollars they want me to raise. I guess they will tell me to come back again in a few months and raise the amount to a greater amount. Till then I will hold my head high and keep my spirits to the maximum. I will pray everyday for good health to all. Thanks again for your support and please sign the guest book. Any fundraising ideas are welcome.
Thank you Rachie for your donation.
It has been a while since I got any donations, one guest signed my guest book and thanks for taking the time to do that. Even if you just sign the guest book it picks up my spirits and gives me even more hope. It makes me feel good to see that people care about me in my time of need. Again, thanks for your support.
Thanks to all who donated in 2013. I am not even close to the $10,000 needed. Please donate any amount that you can, anything helps and I need all the help I can get. Please help me make 2014 a better year in my fund raising efforts. Thank you for your help and God bless.
I went to Duke Hospital on 11/14/2013 for a follow up visit. They were impressed with some of the things on the list that they gave me to do. I was successful on two out of the five things. They said that I still needed to complete the rest of the list, raised the amount of money I need to raise to $10,000. As you can see I am no where near that amount and am in need of donations. Any amount will help and I could even use some prayers. I am working on the 3 things left on the list and starting pulmonary rehab on 11/18/2013. That is one of the more important tasks on the list. Thank you so much and I hope to hear from you soon, you can sign my guest book.
prayers are with you, Gail and Mahlon… I will send a check.. can't be much but every little bit helps…Sincerely,
Evelyn Reisert
