Family and friends of Catana Hubbard are coming together to raise funds for uninsured medical expenses through the nonprofit Help Hope Live. Catana received the incredible gift of life on April 6, 2024, when she underwent a right lung transplant thanks to a generous donor. While she was making strides in her recovery, unforeseen medical complications have left her reliant on 24/7 nursing care.
Catana has dedicated her life to serving students with disabilities, earning her PhD in special education and fulfilling her dream of becoming a university professor. Unfortunately, her health challenges forced her to resign from her beloved career, and she now depends on her daughter for daily care.
By fundraising with Help Hope Live, every donation is tax-deductible and guaranteed to be used solely for Catana’s medical and related expenses. Your support will help provide the essential care and resources she needs as she continues her journey toward healing.
Thank you for standing with Catana and helping her reclaim her independence and quality of life.
When my mom began the lung transplant process in Fall 2023, I never imagined how hard this journey would be. I thought recovery would come easier, but the reality was filled with frightening setbacks. From January to July 2025, I nearly lost her—her body and mind seemed to give up. By God’s grace, she is now stronger and improving each day at home. What we didn’t expect were the financial hardships. Mom lost her job, cutting our family income in half. I juggled two jobs and her pension to cover bills while also caring for her, even selling two cars this summer to stay afloat. That’s why I set up a Help Hope Live fundraiser, where donations go directly toward uncovered medical and caregiving expenses, like car repairs or support at home.I am humbled and grateful for the prayers and support we’ve already received—it helped me fix my car’s brakes and keep us going. I feel guilty asking for help but we need it. Whether it’s sharing the fundraiser, offering ideas, or donations, every bit means so much. More than anything, I’m thankful my mom and I can face this road together.
Fundraiser Post: Supporting My Mom’s Recovery JourneyMy life changed forever on December 30, 2024, when my mother—an incredible professor, caretaker, and role model—was admitted to the hospital for complications following her lung transplant. Before that day, she was thriving; running her household, supporting university students, and managing her responsibilities with grace and independence. She received her donor lung on April 6, 2024, and was on track for recovery.Suddenly, everything changed—she faced dangerous complications including low blood pressure and, most distressingly, hospital delirium. As her condition declined, I had to step in as a caregiver and take over her financial affairs—a responsibility she had always handled with strength and expertise. Managing bills, debts, car and home maintenance was daunting, particularly as I worried for her health and witnessed her become unrecognizable, childlike, and vulnerable.Over several months, she cycled between hospital stays, skilled nursing care, and home recovery. There were moments I feared losing her. The fierce, independent woman I knew faded, replaced by someone struggling just to get through the day. It was an uncharted and frightening journey.Despite these challenges, my mom’s spirit was not lost. With the support of friends, family—especially my daughter, who became my backbone—and changes in her medical care, hope began to return. Adjustments in medications, tube feeding, and psychiatric care brought a miraculous turnaround. From June 2025 to now, her recovery has amazed us all. She’s sharp, independent, and no longer needs tube feeds or help with daily tasks. She’s refreshed her CV, participated in virtual professional development, and set her sights on serving others again.Yet the financial burden remains. My mom had to resign from her university position to focus on healing, leaving our family with one salary and mounting medical, caregiving, and daily living expenses. The costs of ongoing care, transport, home adaptations, and more are significant and overwhelming. How Your Support HelpsCovers medical care and specialist appointmentsAssists with caregiver expenses and daily living supportsKeeps up with home and car maintenance once managed by my momRelieves financial stress so we can focus on her health and recoveryYour donation, no matter the size, makes a real difference. Please consider giving or sharing this campaign. Every act of kindness brings us hope, security, and a path forward on this journey. With gratitude and faith, we believe brighter days are ahead.Thank you to everyone who has donated, your support and prayers have helped me survive
Three Months Home: Gratitude, Growth, and New BeginningsIt dawned on me today that it’s been a while since my last blog post—a sign, perhaps, that daily life has settled into something new and meaningful. My mom has now been home for close to three months, and watching her journey toward recovery has been nothing short of incredible. The progress she’s made is visible in so many ways. She can now shower independently, walk with her walker, do the laundry, cook meals, read books, check her email, text friends, take short trips around town, and so much more. There were days I feared I had lost the bright, capable person she’s always been in the midst of her medical setback, but lately I feel my mother is truly back.Having her home is a blessing I never take for granted. Our new routines—however different or sometimes challenging—are moments I treasure. Of course, we still have our tough days. Frustration creeps in, and the weight of responsibility feels overwhelming at times. One of our goals is to arrange for home health nursing—a regular weekly visit would help us manage her diabetes and get bloodwork done. These extra hands would mean reassurance and peace of mind for both of us.We are endlessly grateful for our dear friend, C, who comes every day to check on Mom and the dogs. Her kindness is woven into the tapestry of our days, offering support in ways big and small. The Help Hope Live Fund remains open, and I intend to use it for upcoming medical bills and, if possible, to bring in additional caregiver support. The financial reality of these past months has been daunting. Since Mom resigned from her job, we lost her income, and her limited pensions don’t go far. So much has been put on the backburner until we can rebuild—my dream of finishing my Ed.D. in Educational Leadership included.Despite the uncertainty, there are bright spots. I’m grateful for my new job in a new school district and thankful that I’m still able to teach Introduction to Exceptional Children at the university. The opportunity to grow as an educator fuels me, and the students bring much-needed perspective.Through the changes and challenges, I am reminded daily: God is good, all the time… and all the time, God is good.
Mom is being discharged from the hosptial this afternoon! She looks an feels so much better. I am starting to see glimpses of mom before everything fell apart. God is answering prayers. Thank you all for oonating and praying for us.
WOW! What a surprise to find on this mothers day. Thank you so much for your donation, prayers and love. We had a good day. Lillie came home to visit her Naw Naw. She was able to help me (Casey) clean the house and organize mom's room. Today we went to the hospital and mom was in a pleasant, but silly mood. She wanted to order food so we ordered True Food and had door dash deliver to the hospital. Despite receiving all her nutrition through a continuous feeding tube she wanted to try to eat real food. She had an edamame dumpling soup, a bite of pizza and a bite of a chocolate tart. Lillie took the Vonline back to Austin and I returned home. I was happy to see mom happy, but sad because she is not the mom I once knew. Seeing her lose so much in a short time has been an awful experience. Thank you for brightening my day as I worry daily about how I will afford to care for mom.
