Help Brittany, a Multi-Organ Transplant Survivor, Receive a Life-Saving Kidney
Brittany Lorraine DeSantiago was born with a rare condition called Gastroschisis, a rare birth defect that led to multiple complications, including liver and small intestine failure. At 8 years old, she received her first life-saving multi-organ transplant—a liver, pancreas, small intestine, and bone marrow. In 2011, Brittany received a kidney transplant, which provided her with 12 additional years of life. All of her life-saving transplants have been made possible through the generosity of deceased donors and her multi-organ transplant has remained strong for 26 years and with no rejection. She’s endured many hospital visits and stays for months on end as a child and would get easily sick due to being immunocompromised and taking anti-rejection medications.. Brittany understands that she will always be sick, but she has never let that define her or set her back in anything she puts her mind too.
Brittany got the news last year that her eGFR for kidney functioning was below 15 and was diagnosed with End-Stage Renal Disease Stage 4. This resulted in the loss of her transplanted kidney after 12 years and this is her last chance at survival. She’s been on dialysis for 6 months now and is in need of a live kidney donor – she is away and has relocated to Miami, Florida back in August. Since then, Help Hope Live has assisted with out-of-pocket medical expenses related to Brittany’s transplant journey. The funds that are received through Help Hope Live, allow your contribution to remain tax-deductible while advancing their mission to assist those navigating their unique disabilities. Every donation helps. We are asking for monthly donations to help Brittany and her potential donor as they get closer to performing this last and final kidney transplant at the Miami Transplant Institute.
Brittany shares her deep gratitude for the incredible support from the Miami Transplant Institute and everyone who’s stood by her during this second kidney transplant journey. From family and high school friends to former coworkers, nurses, doctors, and fellow transplant families—each act of kindness reminds her she’s not alone. Thank you for being here and for your continued love and support.
About Brittany:
Brittany is thirty-three years old and lives her life with purpose and gratitude, honoring her organ donors as she embraces creativity, curiosity, lifelong learning, and a positive outlook on life despite the all the medical challenges she has indured and continues to encounter as a young woman now. Brittany was born and raised in El Paso, Texas, and is the middle child of four siblings with two younger brothers and an older sister.
Brittany lives with her partner Robert Chacon and they’ve been together for 5 years. Brittany is close to everyone in her family and loves her family with all her heart! Brittany is a worry bug and has a type A personality while at work, but this is only because she is profoundly empathetic and passionate about advocating for mental health and individuals with disabilities and goes above and beyond for anyone in a crises. Brittany enjoys her quiet time and enjoys being alone, but also feels most alive when listening to music. Whether that’s with friends or on her own and before I forget, she is obsessed with John Mayer since her teens, a lifelong love she proudly calls her “musical marriage”.
Brittany finds joy and healing through dancing and singing, which serve as her form of therapy ever since she was a kid. She loves to try new recipes and cook, eat, thrift, attend concerts, read up on anything mental health, disability, or psychology related. She absolutely loves to meet new people as a social butterfly, but is overtly selective with who she lets into her life. She cares deeply for others and is always trying to find the little joy and appreciate the little things in life, whether big or small. Brittany believes that having enough friends to count on one hand is more than enough. For her, it’s not about the number of relationships, but the love, support, and quality they bring to one another’s lives
Brittany earned her Bachelor’s in Psychology in 2019 and has dedicated the past seven years to serving other – as a teacher, therapist, and crisis specialist supporting children and individuals with disabilities. Now pursuing her Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, she hopes to one day help transplant recipients, donors, and families facing medical and emotional challenges as future family and child therapist. While on medical leave to focus on her health, Brittany continues to advocate for mental health, disability awareness, and organ donation through her campaign. It’s her resilience and compassion that inspire everyone around her — through this campaign she’s reminded us that she’s done yet.
Brittany has taken a medical leave of absence from school to focus on her health. She has also been away from work temporarily for one year in half come December. Brittany is unable to work right now and must focus on getting healthy until she receives a potential live kidney donor. This time has given her the space to reflect, heal, and prepare for the journey ahead. Every day, it’s clear how eager she is to resume her studies, give back to her community, live out her purpose, and cherish meaningful time with friends and family. Brittany has so much more life to live and countless memories yet to create. She is our transplant warrior, and with your support, she can continue to pursue her purpose and make a lasting impact in the lives of others.
As Brittany we will need ongoing support for approximately 6 months after transplant along with her donor, we are highly encouraging recurring monthly donations, even small donations help. To make a tax-deductible donation, simply click the “Give” button.
Please help us share this fundraising campaign through social media or with friends and family – every share counts. For more information about Brittany’s campaign or to learn about living donor eligibility, please visit: https://kidneyforbrittany.org/

Brittany,
From the day I first met you as that spunky, sunshine-filled 8-year-old, you’ve inspired me more than you could ever know. In all my career as a nurse, and now as your friend for life, nobody has impacted me in such a positive way more than you. You’ve faced every challenge with courage, faith, and that unstoppable smile of yours. I have watched you not only survive, but truly live — and I am so proud of the woman you’ve become.
You’ve been part of my heart for so many years, and I will always be your Miami Mama. As you walk through this next chapter, know that I am with you every step of the way — praying for you, cheering for you, and believing in the beautiful future ahead of you.
You are strong. You are loved. And you’ve got this!
“Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you believe, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” — Romans 15:13

This is a special person who represents all of El Paso. Not only in the credit of her life but the life of others… she has always been strong showing her transplants like a six pack of abs. Another push is all she needs, one last run at the mill. May she go on to support you and the community as you’ve shown her support through out the years!! Thank you all who have given us this special adoption to our family.

Your bright, beautiful energy will carry you through this. Keeping you in our prayers and sending all the love right now. ❤️

Hi Brittany.
I don’t know you, but I’m wishing you all the best. It’s a testament to you as a person to see how much your friends support you, and share your story. Even in the waiting, it continues to be written with courage, and light, and love. And I’m sure the chapters that follow this one will be even more beautiful.
“Patience is not sitting and waiting; it is foreseeing. It is looking at the thorn and seeing the rose, looking at the night and seeing the day.”
