Support for Ben Askren’s Medical Journey
Family and friends of Ben Askren are raising money for the nonprofit Help Hope Live to fund uninsured medical expenses associated with a Transplant. Ben has chosen to fundraise with Help Hope Live in part because donations are tax deductible for contributors and will only be used to cover medical and related expenses.
Ben Askren is currently in the hospital with severe lung damage caused by sudden pneumonia. After 3 weeks of fighting, he remains on life support, and a lung transplant may be his only option for recovery.
We are raising funds through the nonprofit Help Hope Live to cover critical medical costs not covered by insurance. Donations are tax-deductible and will go directly toward medical and related expenses.
Ben is a beloved coach, friend, husband, and father. We miss him deeply and are doing everything we can to support him, Amy and their children during this time.

When Ben was still on life support and we learned his only route to recovery would likely be a lung transplant, I was presented with the predicament that our health coverage would not cover most of the lung transplant and any related costs (which continue for life). These estimated costs were overwhelming, potentially several million if he had any complications.Not knowing if Ben would make it, or if he made it, if he could ever work again, I was encouraged to allow a fund to be opened where people could contribute toward the costs related to the transplant and recovery. It was incredibly uncomfortable for me to do this, especially without Ben’s knowledge, but I didn’t know if I would be responsible for everything on my own if he ended up not recovering. I was completely blown away by our community’s response to this, and several fundraisers were started by friends and even strangers! I want to say thank you so much to everyone who has contributed and showed up for our family in a very scary time. Because of thousands of people helping, and praying, it looks like his transplant may completely covered. You never want to be the person who needs the help, but it has been a very humbling and eye opening experience and we feel so blessed to be surrounded by the most loving and generous people. We are fully aware that there are so many people who need help more than we do, and with our tanks full, we are excited to spend the rest of our lives paying it forward. While Ben still has a lot of healing left to do, he is getting more energy by the day. And he is already finding creative ways to work while following all of the new rules that come with a transplant. I’m most thankful that his amazing mind seems to be unaffected by those weeks of extreme illness and low oxygen. So thank you from the bottom of my heart- we are reading every note from each of you and feeling the love.

I never disliked Askren during his career as a mixed martial artists, but I never particularly supported him either. My uncle had Hodgkin's lymphoma and he received a bone marrow transplant which saved his life. Unfortunately he had complications due to donor versus host and he is no longer with us. My uncle lived because of another person's kindness and sacrifice.

I am a recipient of a double lung transplant. I appreciate how hard it must be to be denied coverage. Even with coverage, the extraordinary out of pocket costs are astronomical. It was by the kindness of others that our anxieties were reduced. (My transplant was a total of $3.5 million at The Cleveland Clinic due to complications). There’s also the on-going costs of several drugs for life. I wish I could give more. I pray for your recovery and better days ahead!

Ben Askren has given more to this world than I had realized, and it's about time we give something back. I'm sure I'm not alone in saying that my first exposure to "Funky" was from watching MMA, and how dominant his career was overall. However, the FloWrestling documentary they did on him highlighted how important he was in his first sport. I knew he was a great wrestler, but never realized how revolutionary he was for the sport of wrestling.
It's a beautiful thing to see someone like Ben want to give back to the sport that gave so much to him, and it pains me to think his condition may not allow him to do as much as he did before. If that is indeed the case, I hope he realizes that he's already done more than enough.

I have followed Mr. Askren\'s wrestling collegiate career since he started to attend Mizzou. My friend and I roomed together at Mizzou and both graduated from the Mechanical engineering program back in 1986. We both did some wrestling, if that is what you called it, back at high school in St. Louis for 2-3 years. Thus, knowing a little about a wrestler\'s plight is rewarding since it is more of an individual sport although teams scores do come into play. I have followed your career after wrestling in the MMA and know how much you give back to the community with your wrestling school and other areas of community support. Your family should never have to go through this challenging time but your support is there. Hoping you get on the mending process soon for your family.

Ben you have no idea who I am, but to me you have been deeply influential. I wrestled from the time I was a small child all the way through high-school. Was completely obsessive and ended up doing quite well at a highschool level but was never able to get an opportunity to receive high level coaching and the responsibilities of life quickly caught up with me. I'm a blue collar worker now and completely uninvolved in the sport outside of being a fan, but throughout the years I've still tuned into a lot of your content with much enjoyment. I hope this message can encourage Ben and his family. I was on a ventilator for 12 weeks during covid and had two pneumomediastinum similar to what it sounds like Ben has. I was 42 and very healthy just like Ben and a long time grappler as well. By the grace of God and that alone, I did not end up needing a lung transplant and I have recovered better than anyone could have imagined. I had stem cell infusions outside of the US and it made a tremendous difference in my recovery. I pray this message makes it to the Askren family and you consider this treatment in your recovery. God Bless you and your family is in my prayers.

Ben, let me preface this by saying I would give more if I could but I have a 3 kids as well and I ain't rich!
I first saw you wrestle when I was maybe in middle school in what I believe was your senior year NCAA finals match. Your style was just so FUNKY! As a pretty funky wrestler myself that was brilliant to see. It was unorthodox, technical, smart and tactful wrestling. Most of all it was a privilege and an inspiration to witness.
I remember sitting in a Buffalo wild wings full casual MMA fans when you fought Jorge Masvidal. The place erupted with "OH's" and cheers. I was so pissed. Screw that guy. 9 out of 10 times you win that fight in exactly the manner you told him it would happen in the pre fight.
As a fellow father of young children and married man with a beautiful wife you look at other men in a similar position as you and hope the best for them and their families. I'm sure you have experienced that. And now I look at you taking on this new battle and I know in my heart that it will be difficult for you and they're our numerous ways in which this could end poorly for you. But I know that you will fight because though I may not know you personally I know your heart it is the same as mine we are wrestlers we are warriors, we are fathers we are husbands we are friends and it is our job to fight not only for us but for those around us. Your life is in God's hands and only he knows how this will play out. We control what we can and pray about the rest. How long to see you on the mat again and to hear of your full recovery and one day see a story that you walked your daughters down the aisle and one day die at a ripe old age peacefully in the arms of your loving wife.
As long as you fight and never quit you can never lose.
Should you croak on us and your children will have seen their father look death in its eyes and say not today. They will have seen you desire with your entire soul to stay with them. As will your wife.
Hope you look like RoboCop when the doctors finish with you so we can get that Masvidal rematch.

As an MMA fan I always felt it would be very interesting to have you as one of the voices of the sport - so you better listen to what your doctors and family tell you, rest up, recover, and find your voice again so we can make the fight game funky again.
You gotta do it for your beautiful family - your boy Chase is doing so well! - and for yourself. I would say do it for the fans, but you don't owe us anything. Just get better fast, bring out the flip flops, and smile and wave at the next UFC event when they bring you out to celebrate your recovery and yet another victory.
When you retired I felt a bit strange, and thought that man, I feel like Ben has one more fight in him. As it turns out, you did indeed. Keep fighting man, you will not lose.

I think it was roughly 25 year ago I stepped on the mat against Ben. And people asked if I had wrestled him when they hear my age. So I have to tell them the story that I had him on his back for a second then he got mad and whooped my ass across the mat. But I still go to the high school wrestling room and we have a few wrestling that train at you academy one headed to Wisconsin and one is headed to Michigan. I was diagnosed with lung cancer when I was 43 years old. Had my right upper lobe removed. I’ve been able to make an almost full recovery. If I can do it Ben can definetly do it. I’ve rooted him in wrestling and MMA. This is just another fight. I’ll be rooting for him this time around as well.

I have seen Ben dozens of times at different competitions, I haven't really met him though. I can see him in his flip flops on a Friday coaching a youth sports tournament, then see him the next day on TV coaching the world team trials. He doesn't care about your age or ability, he helps everyone.

When my son was in elementary school in Columbia, MO he wrestled with the Mizzou Club team. We used to see Ben up there and he was very nice to the kids. There are a lot of people out there in the public that aren't very nice and Ben was. My son is now a grown man and a really good person for what wrestling did for him. Ben is in our thoughts and prayers.
