Fighting for His Future: Donald’s Cancer Journey
At just 27 years old, Donald Benedict has been forced to put his future on hold to face a fight he never saw coming: cancer. What began with unexplained shortness of breath and fluid buildup has revealed a significantly large mass in his chest. Donald spent 2 weeks inpatient at UC San Diego, where his medical team was able to manage the buildup of fluid around his heart and lungs, and ensure he is strong enough for the cancer battle ahead.
His preliminary diagnosis is Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, but Donald is also hoping for a second opinion review at MD Anderson Cancer Center or City of Hope , some of the world’s leading cancer hospitals. For young patients like Donald, accurate and advanced cancer treatment is vital. These hospitals offer some of the most advanced diagnostic testing, clinical expertise, and innovative treatment options available anywhere. Having a second opinion could make all the difference in confirming the diagnosis, ensuring he receives the most effective treatment, and giving him the best chance at long-term survival.
A Life on the Cusp of New Beginnings
Until just weeks ago, Donald was on the brink of realizing his dream. He is nearing completion of his degree in Agricultural Sciences, supported by a scholarship, and was preparing to launch his career with a global leader in sustainable irrigation solutions—a role that would allow him to put his passion for sustainable agriculture into practice.
Donald’s story was even featured in San Diego Currents, highlighting his commitment to using his education to transform farming practices and help solve water challenges in agriculture. After years of hard work, he was finally ready to step into a meaningful career in agronomy.
But life has taken an unexpected turn.
A Twin Bond Like No Other
Donald’s journey is also deeply tied to his twin brother, David. Born at just 26 weeks, both boys defied the odds and thrived despite the risks and challenges of prematurity.
In 2018, David was in a devastating car accident and suffered a major traumatic brain injury. Since then, he has faced significant challenges in his daily life. Donald wants to be a source of strength and support for his brother, with the hope of one day creating an independent life where the two of them could live together.
Now, it’s Donald who needs support and David’s turn to watch his twin fight for survival.
The Weight of a Diagnosis at 27
To hear the word cancer at any age is devastating—but at 27, it is shattering. Donald has spent years working tirelessly toward stability, independence, and a future where he and his brother could thrive together. Suddenly, that future is uncertain.
If his diagnosis is confirmed as Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, there is hope: the disease is considered one of the most treatable forms of cancer, with survival rates above 85% when caught early. Standard treatment often involves chemotherapy, targeted therapies, and sometimes radiation, typically lasting six months to a year. For a young adult like Donald, early and precise treatment is crucial for both survival and long-term quality of life.
The Financial Burden
Even with health insurance, the costs Donald faces are overwhelming. A second opinion at MD Anderson or City of Hope and travel for continued care add to the strain. Here are just some of the expenses your donation could help cover:
Travel and lodging for consultations and treatments
Out-of-pocket costs for advanced pathology and treatments
Repeat hospital stays
Chemotherapy, medications, and follow-up imaging
Lost wages during treatment and recovery
Relocation or living adjustments post-treatment to allow for independence for himself and his twin
How You Can Help
Donald has always been determined whether overcoming the odds as a premature infant, excelling in his education, or carving out a career in sustainable agriculture. Now, he needs a community of supporters to rally around him.
Your donation will not only help cover the crushing financial burden of cancer treatment but will also give Donald the chance to continue pursuing his dreams: a career in agronomy, a home for himself and his brother, and a life defined by hope, not illness.
Please consider contributing today and sharing Donald’s story. Together, we can give him the best chance to overcome this fight and reclaim the future he’s worked so hard for.
What HappenedUntil this summer, Donald was living the life of a hardworking 27-year-old: finishing his degree, building toward a career he loved, and recently moving back home to Imperial, California to continue his education. But in May, things began to change. Donald started experiencing night sweats, fatigue, and weight loss. By August, he had developed a cough that kept him up all night. On August 15th urgent care sent him home with treatment for asthma, but the symptoms only got worse. On August 19th, his mom and sister’s birthday, Donald went to the ER assuming it was pneumonia. After extensive tests, doctors found a large mass in his chest, fluid in his lungs, and fluid around his heart. He was transferred to UC San Diego, where he was admitted for two weeks. There, he underwent multiple emergency procedures: a drain placed around his heart, and later that same night, a chest tube to remove fluid from his lung. Surrounded by his parents, siblings, and extended family, Donald endured biopsies and procedures as doctors worked toward answers. Finally, the diagnosis came: Classical Hodgkin’s Lymphoma (cHL), with a large mass encasing his chest, surrounding his aorta and blood vessels, and infiltrating his left lung. A blood clot had also developed in his jugular and nearby veins. On September 4th, Donald began chemotherapy. The next day, September 5th, he was discharged to return home, where he now lives with his mom and his twin brother. The Reality of CancerAt his first clinic visit on September 10th, Donald learned what the road ahead will look like.Treatment: Biweekly chemotherapy, with possible stem cell therapy and radiation depending on his response.Prognosis: While Hodgkin’s lymphoma is often highly treatable, Donald’s advanced case and the location of the mass around vital organs make his situation more complicated and risky.Life Impact: He has had to withdraw from school, cannot work, and faces major unknowns about his future. On top of this, chemotherapy places his fertility at risk — meaning he must make difficult, time-sensitive decisions about whether and how to preserve his ability to become a father one day. What Donald NeedsDonald’s world turned upside down in just weeks. Right now, his focus has to be on healing and surviving. That means he needs our help with:Living expenses while he cannot workTravel and lodging costs for weekly and biweekly chemo treatments at UCSD (1.5 hours from home)Fertility preservation to protect his chance of becoming a fatherSecond opinions and additional medical support as his treatment progressesDonald’s future is now in the hands of advanced medicine, God, and the unwavering love of his family, friends, and community. How You Can HelpWe are so grateful for every prayer, message, and donation received so far.
