Wheels for Independence: A Van for David Smical
David Smical is a 23-year-old student at Grand Canyon University (GCU) doing his master’s in information technology. At 3 years old, David was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). He quickly lost his ability to walk and most of his upper-body strength, and at the age of 5 he became wheelchair bound. Throughout his life, David did everything he could to regain his independence.
With his limitations, David became a passionate gamer. Ever since he got his gaming computer at the start of high school, David enjoyed being competitive. He can stay up for hours playing with his friends and enjoying their company. With his mindset, he has brought joy to people around him.
Due to SMA, David has a hard time with basic tasks such as dressing, bathing, cooking, and chores that he needs another person to assist. Transportation is also limited for David, because he is in a power wheelchair, David cannot get into any car. He relies on public transportation, which is often late and requires days of planning to make sure the ride does arrive. Other times he can use his mom’s van, but only on days when she is available to take David.
David is fundraising for a new Toyota Sienna Van. The logistics of modifications are resolved, but for that to happen, David must have the car first. A brand-new vehicle that accommodates David’s needs like size and ramp go for $45,000. This van can last for over 10 years and will give David more freedom for his life.
David knows that this van is major step forward in gaining more independence. He can use this van to get to and from work, get groceries, go to church, hang out with friends, and overall be able to get to his destination reliably.
Please donate to Help Hope Live in David’s honor today, ask your friends, family, and anybody that you know that can give! If you know anyone that would like to help donate in either through a company or other means, please let David know at [email protected]. Together, we can help David drive toward independence. Thank you so much for your support and generosity.
