Dear Friends,
If you’re reading this letter, it’s because you are a friend (or a friend of a friend) of Mona Lisa Morris. Whether you know her as a designer, co-worker, volunteer, friend or family member, there’s one thing we can all agree on: she’s absolutely irreplaceable. Mona is a truly sincere friend — the kind of person who keeps her promises, sticks by you when you need her, and goes out of her way to lend a helping hand — and now, she needs our help.
For the past nineteen years, Mona has been struggling with lupus nephritis, an immune system disease that has weakened her kidneys, required countless surgeries and four rounds of chemotherapy, all of which drastically reduced her kidney function. She’s worked hard to stay healthy and fight the disease, but over the past year her kidney function has declined rapidly. On March 3, 2011, Mona underwent a live donor kidney transplant.
In times like these, friends are more important than ever — Mona’s lifelong friend, Jenny Vann, generously volunteered to donate her healthy kidney. The good news is Jenny was a perfect match and approved for the transplant. The bad news is, the kidney transplant was a very expensive surgery, requiring clinic visits, doctor’s fees, and medications that Mona will need for the rest of her life. Many of these expenses are not covered by insurance and that’s why a fundraising campaign has been established through HelpHOPELive in Mona Lisa’s honor.
Throughout all of this, Mona has continued to work full time while volunteering for the Human Rights Initiative of North Texas, AIDS Outreach, Empty Bowls of Dallas and Fort Worth (benefitting area food banks). Even as Mona’s health deteriorated, she continued to give, serving as a foster parent for her ten-year-old niece Mariah and supporting family members, despite mounting medical bills and living expenses.
We all know Mona is strong, intelligent, and tough enough to handle anything life throws at her — and with her fierce independence, she would never ask you for help. That’s why we’re asking for her. On behalf of Mona Lisa Morris, we would like to thank you for the gift of your friendship, love, support and prayers — especially Jenny, who has bravely given Mona the gift of life through the donation of her kidney.
A fundraising campaign has been established through HelpHOPELive (formerly NTAF) to help pay for Mona and Jenny’s kidney transplant surgery and the medical care that will follow. Here’s how to help, with your tax-deductible contribution: For more information, please contact HelpHOPELive at 800-642-8399.
Thanks for your support!

It’s been ten years since my kidney transplant. I’m celebrating my 47th birthday. If you’d like to get me a gift, please consider donating to this campaign. During the pandemic, I’ve been ill and also dislocated my right shoulder. My insurance covers general care but the specialists are out-of-pocket as well as hospital stays + ambulances. Any amount is welcomed or a hand made gift. I’m grateful you’re in my life. I love you, with all my heart and three kidneys.

Oak Cliff artist gets best friend’s kidney, fundraiser planned
By Rachel Stone | February 16th, 2011 | Art, News, Videos
Monaliza Morris and Jenny Vann became friends in middle school in Hawaii, where both their dads were stationed in the Air Force.
“We were inseparable,” says Morris. “We had classes together. Almost everyday after school, we’d go for long walks around the neighborhood. We planned movie nights at her house, inviting a mix of foreign and American students. We made outfits and did our hair up.”
Typical kid stuff. But their friendship never dwindled. They both moved to Texas eventually, and Morris considers herself part of Vann’s family — she spends Christmas every year with Vann and her family.
Morris, a commercial artist who lives in Oak Cliff, was laid off in 2009. About the same time, her mom and young niece came to live with her. And she found out that lupus — which had been diagnosed on a visit to Vann’s house in Victoria when she was in her late teens — had caused terrible damage to her kidneys. She had to have a new kidney, or she would be put on dialysis for the rest of her life.
When Vann found out, she was the first of Morris’s friends to get tested, and she was a match.
“We joke that we’re kidney sisters,” Morris says.
The transplant operation is scheduled for the first week of March. And they are hosting a fundraiser to help with medical expenses from 5-8:30 p.m. Feb. 23 at Agora Entertainment in Irving. The Art of Friendship fundraiser will include a silent art auction and live music.
To attend the event, RSVP to Mohammad Rafiq Salleh. To make a donation toward Morris’ medical expenses, go to HelpHopeLive.org. Under “DONATE”, click "Support A Client Campaign", type “Mona Lisa Morris", and click “GIVE”.

About the Event
Local Dallas artists have generously donated their artwork for an impressive collection available through a silent art auction — and you’ll also find gift cards donated by local restaurants, ATT Performing Arts Center and more. While the auction is silent, the party will be rocking with live music from Creekbend Classic Rock Band. Plus, enjoy appetizers and alcoholic (& nonalcoholic) beverages to make the evening festive. All proceeds will benefit a special fund established for Monaliza by the helpHOPELive (formerly National Transplant Assistance Fund (NTAF), a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping transplant patients pay for medical expenses.

Her courage and strength are inspiring. Unfortunately, kidney transplantation is a very expensive surgery, requiring clinic visits, doctor’s fees, and medications that Mona will need for the rest of her life. Kidney Sisters
If your best friend, sister, brother, parent or child became sick, and the only way to save their life was to donate one of your own organs, what would you say? Would you risk your health to save someone you love — or would you hope that someone else would step up to the plate? It’s a tough decision, even for a loved one. But when Jenny Vann heard about her best friend, Monaliza’s need for a kidney transplant, she volunteered her healthy kidney without hesitation. To Jenny, it was just what best friends do.
“I was asked by someone if I thought that giving Monaliza my kidney would bring us closer together as friends,” Jenny said. “I thought about it for a while. I came to the conclusion that we're already as close as two friends could be. I love Monaliza very much, and I'm just glad that I can do something for her that is going to keep her healthy.” Click here to read more about Monaliza and Jenny and donate online.
We’re not asking for your kidney — just your presence! Please join us for this fun and very worthwhile event. RSVP to [email protected]

Hi Monaliza,
The money I posted was from everyone at Integrated Test. We all hope your are doing great!

Made a donation last week, Monaliza. I hope you and Jenny are up and about soon. A kidney transplant is a chance at a new life. My mom donated a kidney in Australia to one of her best friends back in 2003 and everything has been great! Her friend is in her 60s and living a better life than she has in the last 35 years.

Just made a donation, Mona, may God bless you!
