I was born with a congenital heart defect called tricuspid atresia and underwent three open-heart surgeries before the age of five. Those early surgeries gave me the chance to grow up and build a life, but my heart has continued to struggle. In July 2025, I was diagnosed with severe diastolic dysfunction, leading to heart failure. To survive, I now need a heart transplant. The last 7 months I have been meeting with specialists and having testing done to see if I am a candidate. Most recently I had vascular surgery to repair necessary arteries needed for the transplant procedure. Currently I am being evaluated by MedStar Washington’s transplant team to see if I am a good candidate for their program.
I am doing everything I can to navigate this journey responsibly—applying for every available assistance program and securing health insurance through the marketplace. Even so, the estimated cost of a heart transplant exceeds $3 million, not including the lifelong follow-up care and medications that will be required. Not to mention the testing current necessary to see if I am a Transplant candidate. Insurance will not cover all of these expenses, and many of my necessary prescriptions are already only partially covered. As my family and I move forward through this overwhelming chapter, we are deeply grateful for any support, kindness, or help you are able to give. Your generosity truly means hope and time—things that are priceless to us.
I have chosen to fundraise with Help Hope Live in part because donations are tax deductible for contributors and will only be used to cover medical and related expenses. Unlike Go Fund Me, Help Hope Live is a charity organization so funds will not be counted as personal income, which would cause me to lose assistance I have been able to receive.
Duke said yes to a heart! The liver team is still trying to decide if I also need a liver. I go back for a biopsy soon. Hopefully that will be the last test they need to decide.
🫀Update 🫀Duke heart transplant team says yes, that I am a good candidate for a new heart. Their liver transplant team isn’t sure yet. They would like me to return for more testing before they decide. Overall, my liver function is still good and they think I might not need a liver yet. However, there are many masses that look like cancer in my liver. If I am understanding correctly, they need to determine if the masses are indeed malignant before they decide what to do. Duke has scheduled an MRI for April 29th, hopefully we will know more soon after
ART FOR A NEW HEART INFOI want this to be a fun, light hearted fundraiser that anyone can participate in. Since my family is donating so much of their time and skill I want all aspects of the art to be up to them. FAQYou choose the medium, but what are the mediums that you work in?- there are several artist donating time and skills, so it’s whatever they prefer! What is the size range for each option?- whatever the artist chooses. I paint on 8x10 watercolor paper most of the timeDoes the price include shipping?-yes, or local delivery What’s the longest you expect it to take?- I try to be quick but I have stretches of time where I am not well enough to paint. Can they pick the color theme for the parts that are not the pet?- No, all aspects are up to the artist.
Last week I spent Monday- Friday testing with the Duke heart transplant team. We learned a lot more about the transplant process and feel more prepared. Overall, we are impressed. Today I started tests with the Duke liver transplant team. Luckily, a lot of testing/ meetings overlap so I’ll only have three days of liver testing. We will know in a few weeks what their teams decide.
Check out this video to see some finished pet portraits!I can mail them anywhere, so it is the perfect gift for the pet lover in your life.
After insurance refused to work with MedStar Washington, I have started conversations with both Duke and Vanderbilt.Vanderbilt reviewed my case last year and determined I needed vascular surgery before I was a candidate. As many know, I had that vascular surgery on January 21st. When I spoke with Vanderbilt last week they assured me they had already pre authorized transplant with my insurance last year. They are double checking that it will remain so while requesting records from my vascular surgery.Their transplant coordinator reached out to begin scheduling updated scans at WVU soon. This feels like a big step in the right direction!
We wanted to attend the spaghetti luncheon but could not. We hope it was a grand success and would try to make the next one.
