My sister and I are writing to you today to ask for your prayers and support for our brother, Joseph Ozoniak. As most of you know, he has been battling heart failure for the past thirteen years.
Since January 2011 he has had three major surgeries. The first took place at Mt. Sinai Hospital in NYC on January 21; Joseph had both mitral valve reconstruction and a Tri-Ad Tricuspid Annuloplasty ring procedure. Our brother’s weak heart was not able to benefit more than a few months from these procedures and in mid- May a pacemaker/defibrillator was implanted to assist his failing heart. At that time, doctors told Joseph that a heart transplant was his only hope for survival. On May 29, 2011 Joseph was fortunate enough to receive his heart transplant.
Joseph is a devoted father of two children, and is active in his community. He attends St. Thomas the Apostle RC Church in Oakridge, NJ, and is a Third Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus, Council 5510. He is also represents Jefferson Township as an elected Morris County committee member. Joseph hopes to soon get back to his volunteer work as a Knight, and to enjoy all that life has to offer, especially playing golf, fishing, and spending time with his family.
The cost of the transplant surgery itself is staggering. The cost of survival is even more expensive. Even with insurance, Joseph will have many uninsured transplant-related expenses such as: co-pays and deductibles, doctor visits and the costly immunosuppressant medications that he will need to take for the rest of his life (which initially will be close to $2,000 a month). We need your help!
To help with some of these uninsured expenses, a fundraising campaign in Joseph’s honor has been established with HelpHOPELive. HelpHOPELive is a nonprofit organization that has been working with the transplant community for more than 28 years. All donations are tax-deductible and are administered by HelpHOPELive for transplant-related expenses only. Won’t you please help us?Thank you for your consideration in our desperate attempt to give Joseph a second chance at life. We thank you for your generosity, support and prayers.

The life of a person who has had a transplant is not easy. Complications always arise. Recently I had to have surgery to remove large kidney stones, while blasting the stones to break them up, the surgeon hit the wall of my kidney and collapse the kidney, and from that day forward I have had to have dialysis to clean my blood. I am now on the kidney transplant list waiting to have a kidney transplant. The wait is 55 months in my area. I am on the list now a year. I really need a donor to come forth. November 2024.
As of November 2022 I have been in kidney failure. The good news is this, as of May 30,2023 I am on the kidney donation list. Yes, I need a kidney. I have a four more years wait unless I can find a donor. 14 years since my heart transplant, the heart is strong, and I did qualify to be on the kidney list. Keep me in your prayers.
In September of 2022 I went in the hospital for kidney stone removal. During the surgery my kidney collapsed. I now in kidney failure and on dialysis. I need a kidney replacement.
Since my transplant, I have returned to life as an active Knight. I became a fourth-degree knight, and also Grand Knight of my council. I moved to North Carolina, and now trust Duke Medical team to extend my life. I have written a book about my experience yet to be published due to the excessive cost. I have joined the choir singing praise to God for my life. I have found that each year has brought a new challenge this year it is COVID and kidney stones. That is news in 2020.
June 2017, I have moved to Burlington, NC. On June 21, I spent half a day at Duke Medical for blood work and stress testing. All look fine, and I was very impressed with Duke Medical.
It is June 2017, I have moved to Burlington N.C. I also had a visit at Duke medical for a stress test and to meet a new transplant team at Duke. Now the team here will help me adjust to all new doctors.
I have reached my five year anniversary. Every year of life brings new challenges. Funds for medication and medical bills are always appreciated. The new Health care program has not helped me, but rather hurt me as I lost the grant program for my life sustaining medication.
CALL TO IMMEDIATE ACTION
Please consider making an end-of-year tax-deductible donation to HelpHOPELive in honor of Joe to help with his many out-of-pocket expenses.
Many thanks!
