I am writing on behalf of my daughter Jennifer Phillips. Jennifer is a beautiful young lady who lived a very active life until her horrific car accident shortly after her 20th birthday. Jennifer suffered a life changing spinal cord injury in the accident. Now a C4-C6 quadriplegic, Jennifer can’t walk and she has limited use of her arms and hands.
At the time of the accident, Jennifer was a junior at Texas Woman’s University in Denton, TX. While recovering, she lost almost a year of school. Upon returning she could no longer live on campus, but had to commute daily. Two and a half years later she rolled across the stage to graduate with a bachelor’s degree in marketing.
Jennifer’s goals were and still are high and attainable. She has a remarkable drive to succeed. She spends a lot of her time volunteering at Baylor Institute for Rehabilitation where she received her initial rehab. She is a peer mentor there and is also on a committee of a group that provides support and inspiration to patients and the families of those affected by spinal cord injuries.
Jennifer is very active, but still seeks to be more independent. Her hopes are to physically get stronger and develop a better range of motion. She desires to continue rehab at Project Walk Spinal Cord Injury Recovery Center which is “an internationally recognized non-profit organization, exists to provide an improved quality of life to people with spinal cord injuries through intense exercise-based recovery programs, education, support and encouragement.”
The cost for this cutting-edge therapy program is not covered by insurance, so a fundraising campaign has been established in Jennifer’s honor with HelpHOPELive (formerly NTAF), a nonprofit organization that has been assisting the transplant community for nearly 30 years. In 2000, they expanded their mission to include those who have sustained a catastrophic injury. All contributions are tax deductible, are held by HelpHOPELive in the South-Central Spinal Cord Injury Fund, and are administered by HelpHOPELive for injury-related expenses only.
