Michael has been an insulin-dependent diabetic since his youth. In 2000, Mike was diagnosed with kidney failure. His condition continued to deteriorate and he had to go on dialysis. Thanks to his brother and another donor family, Mike received a new kidney on June 27, 2018. They became the first in South Carolina to team up for a compatible kidney transplant exchange
Even with insurance, Mike has many uninsured transplant-related expenses such as: co-pays and deductibles, doctor visits, travel to the Medical University of South Carolina along with a caregiver, and the costly immunosuppressant medications that he will need to take for the rest of this life. Mike is single, lives alone, and is responsible for himself — he needs our help to meet this financial challenge.
To help with this financial burden, a fundraising campaign in Mike’s honor has been established with Help Hope Live, a nonprofit organization that has been assisting the transplant community for 30 years. All donations are tax-deductible, are held by Help Hope Live in the South-Atlantic Kidney/Pancreas Transplant Fund, and are administered by Help Hope Live for transplant-related expenses only. Your contribution is greatly appreciated. Please share this letter with anyone who you think could make a difference. Remember that every contribution counts. We also ask that you keep Mike in your prayers.
Thank you for your kind consideration.

Michael Rau had his successful kidney transplant on June 27, 2018. The dedication of his brother in providing a kidney and his doctor in arranging a double transplant proves that we all are our brothers keepers. See this website.
