Lan worked for the city of Seattle from February 2013 to June 2014 and then retired. He feels he has more to offer through volunteering for community causes, particularly those related to spinal cord rehabilitation and church ministries.
Since last report, Lan’s function has been stable or improving in areas of strength of upper body and trunk control. The challenge of quadriplegia threw us an unexpected curveball in the form of bladder malfunction, which has now been remedied or held in check through twice a year surgery at Harborview Urology.
Lan attended Pushing Boundaries for over a year, having weekly two-hour sessions which include use of the FES cycle and upper body weight work. He is also learning to drive and enjoyed outings during the summer on his hand trike.
We thank all of you who helped us through the past 2 years. Donations to helpHOPELive in total have allowed us to purchase a manual wheelchair, a hand tricycle, attend Pushing Boundaries for over a year, and pay for uncovered medical expenses. All of these items or events have significantly contributed to our progress and quality of life. Medical care and equipment is enormously expensive and, much of it is not covered by traditional insurance.
We have decided to continue our fundraising effort to help maintain our quality of life. Lan would like to work with Pushing Boundaries to enhance his function and maintain his present level of strength and flexibility. The psychological benefits of this participation alone are of value to him. An FES cycle at home would allow more frequent use than once a week and would be greatly beneficial.
Please help us move forward toward these goals. Lan has worked hard to date and we want to allow him to continue his endeavor.
We will continue to provide updates on our status. Please feel free to contact us with any questions you may have. For more information, please contact HelpHOPELive at 800.642.8399.
Thanks for your support!
