Dear Friends, Family and Supporters,
Have you ever thought that you might be able to help save a life?
My name is Jean and I would like to tell you about my husband. Epi is a brother, son, adored friend and a father to three boys.
As many of you already know, Epi was diagnosed with Polycystic Kidney Disease and has been courageously battling end-stage renal failure for nearly five years.
In 2003, Epi suffered two brain aneurysms. They occurred a month to the day apart. He defied odds and fought through life support and three surgeries. Two years later the staggering diagnosis of Polycystic Kidney Disease. The nephrologist explained that the aneurysms were “text book” and associated with his kidney disease. It is an aggressive genetic disease. Epi has a cousin on dialysis and an aunt that has already received a transplant. It’s quite prevalent in his family.
Two and a half years ago Epi started dialysis. These treatments are keeping him alive. We travel three times a week for dialysis treatments lasting four hours. Epi has been hospitalized for weeks and even months at a time because of cysts in his failing kidneys. These cysts get very large and rupture, causing extensive bleeding and hemorrhage that is life threatening.
Doctors have told Epi that his only chance at survival is to have a kidney transplant. Epi’s fragile medical state no longer allows him to work.
Although we are now insured, insurance will not cover all of his life-saving surgeries or the additional transplant-related expenses that Epi will have such as: premiums, co-pays, deductibles, doctor visits and the costly immunosuppressant medications that Epi will need to take for the rest of his life. This presents us with a huge financial challenge that we can’t possibly meet alone. Anticipated first-year expenses could easily exceed $250,000.
To help offset Epi’s mounting medical and insurance costs, a fundraising campaign in His honor has been established with HelpHOPELive, a nonprofit organization. They have been assisting the transplant community for nearly 30 years. All contributions are tax deductible, are held by HelpHOPELive in the Southeast Kidney Transplant Fund. These funds are administered by HelpHOPELive for transplant-related expenses only!
Please consider making a contribution. It is not easy to ask for help, but we graciously ask you to consider our need.
We have begun this exciting fundraising campaign in Epi’s name and would be honored if you would join us.
With sincere gratitude,
Jean Ray-Resendiz and family

UPDATE:
Currently we are covered by Cobra insurance that we pay $877.85 per month for. Our account has gone from nearly 18K to 7K quickly. We are additionally concerned that coverage may not be available with my current employer when the Cobra expires. Yes, there is Obama Care and for some it is a godsend. For us though, it means long wait periods and denial of referrals for specialists and specialized testing. We have done the research. IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT OUR PRIVATE INSURANCE CONTINUE!
Currently, Epi is quite stable. He has not had any recent hospital visits or emergent episodes. Thank The Lord! This has been a very difficult decade for us but we keep fighting.
We are incredibly grateful for the amazing support system that we are surrounded by. Thank you all.

Stay tuned! Planning on putting together a fundraiser for November at Hamburger Mary's. Drag Queen bingo!!!
Last nights fundraiser was terrific. Thank you everyone. We raised $1325
Third fundraiser being planned now. Stay tuned!
ALSO............
December 3, 2014 Tijuana Flats will host a fundraising event. From 5-8 PM, 20% of your purchase will be donated to HelpHOPELive Southeast Kidney Transplant Fund in honor of Epi.
Although we have had some amazing fundraisers, the HelpHOPELive fundraising campaign balance has dwindled to $7000. Medical expenses and insurance premiums come at a high price.

UPDATE:
Our second review for transplant acceptance was denied. Epi needs a liver biopsy, endoscopy and DSE stress test. Also his platelets are very low and they need to come up before we can be reviewed again.

God is good! After applying for and being denied placement on any transplant list due to a lack of insurance and funds.......I (Epi's wife) finally became eligible for insurance with my employer in June. Fabulous insurance! (Pre-existing conditions precluded Epi eligibility that we couldn't possibly have afforded anyway. An employer- sponsored plan was our only hope.)
The funds that we have raised thus far, help us pay for VERY costly premiums. It is imperative that we continue to raise and renew funds. Insurance certainly does't cover everything.
In August we were finally given an appointment for our first phase with Tampa General Transplant Team. Four weeks later we received a call telling us that our case was closed due a lack of finances. We were deflated and defeated. Having endured numerous brain surgeries and four times on life support since 2003......we couldn't take any more pain or let downs.
By the grace of god, the phone rang weeks later. Somehow our case was reopened. We are now finishing phase 3. All testing has been completed and we have had the honor of meeting the surgeon that will perform my Epi's surgery.
We now await final review by the transplant team and an "official" listing on waiting list for kidney transplant.
Please help us continue to raise much needed funds. We have been so far and yet have so much further to go. We will need a lifetime of incredibly expensive and necessary anti-rejection drugs to keep the new kidney healthy and alive.
The entire Resendiz family and "fan club" thanks you for your love and support.
We will continue to update our page and to-date situation.
Regards,
Team Resendiz

Epi, we all love you, your family and your faith in God will get us through this.

Hi Resendiz family. I recently came across your card at Lucky Dill in PH. It caught my eye because I was actually placing my OWN card on their table with my sons information on it as he is in need of a kidney as well. My son is only 1 yr old and was born with stage 4 kidney disease. We are also doing fundraising and sharing our story. I wish you the best of luck!
Melissa
Please know that I continially pray for you. I am telling anyone who will listen about you both. I have great faith that God will deliver Epi from this terrible ordeal and return him to us healed.
Evelyn, Cumming, GA
Epi, I love you. We WILL get you a kidney, I promise.
