My father, John Romeo, is a courageous man who, after losing both of his kidneys to renal cell carcinomas, is diligently enduring multiple dialysis sessions per day, seven days a week. He has been on dialysis for a year and a half and has struggled through several medical complications and hospitalizations. A transplant is his only hope of survival.
Despite his ongoing medical struggle, my father continues to maintain his career as a civil engineer. He is a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He adores his two young grandchildren and is determined to watch them grow up.
My father and I are currently enrolled in the Paired Donor Program at UAB. As soon as a matching live donor is found for him, and a matching kidney recipient is found for me, my father will be able to receive a kidney transplant. However, transplants are extremely expensive, and can be financially devastating. Although his insurance will cover the majority of the procedure, he will have numerous out-of-pocket expenses, such as: payments for hospital visits, clinics, and costly anti-rejection medications that he will need to take for the rest of his life.
To help with such expenses, a fundraising campaign has been established in my father’s honor with HelpHOPELive, a nonprofit organization. HelpHOPELive has been assisting the transplant community for 30 years. All donations are tax-deductible, are held by HelpHOPELive in the Southeast Kidney transplant Fund, and are administered by HelpHOPELive for transplant-related expenses only.

It’s never easy to ask for assistance, but funding my father’s transplant is a difficult challenge and we need your help. Your financial gifts and prayers will be greatly appreciated.
