We are writing to you on behalf of Gregory Snyder. As you may have already learned, Greg suffered a tragic and life-changing accident while hiking on June 17, 2013 – his vertebral fractures and spinal cord injury required two fusions and a lengthy ICU stay. He is now undergoing inpatient rehabilitation—learning to adjust to life as a T9 paraplegic—to become independent.
This tragic accident has had many impacts on Greg’s life, both immediate and long-term. As many of you know, Greg is a fourth year medical student at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. He has excelled as a medical student and aspires to become an Emergency Medicine or Neuro-critical care physician.
Greg’s injury has forced him to take this year to recover before finishing medical school. Those who know Greg well, or even in passing, know that he will meet this challenge in his usual fearless and determined manner. We know a bright future awaits Greg, despite these circumstances.
Greg’s family and friends have enveloped him in support during this difficult time; however, we want to do more. We anticipate significant financial costs to Greg and his family as time passes – co-pays for inpatient treatment; medical equipment that will allow Greg to both practice medicine and return to being an independent, active man; urgent home modifications to accommodate Greg’s new limitations.
A fundraising campaign has been established in Greg’s honor with HelpHOPELive, a nonprofit organization that has been assisting the spinal cord injury community for close to 15 years. All contributions are tax-deductible, held by HelpHOPELive in the Mid-Atlantic Spinal Cord Injury Fund for medical-related expenses during Greg’s lifetime.
Please consider donating to the cause of helping Greg become strong again, so that he can get back to achieving his dreams and make the world a better place for us all.Thank you for your love and support.
Sincerely,
Greg’s friends & family

Greg,
I wish you both large and small successes in the year ahead and your recovery. The short time you and I spent together managing mol/neu 408 leaves me no doubt that you will make those successes happen on a daily basis (with good spirits, too).
Thinking of you.

We don't know each other. But from the little I've read about you I am sure that you will use this experience, though tragic on the surface, to your advantage. I myself was in a very bad accident years ago...and there were a lot of questions that asked, a range of emotions...and I had a choice to make. The choice, in the end, must be to go forward and make the most of this fragile life. And understand that there is a unique perspective that one gains from something like this. And this perspective in turn will make you a better doctor and more understanding person. Trying to figure out WHY will lead nowhere. The only question to answer now is "what will you do."

Hi Greg,
I saw your story from a friend of a friend. My boyfriend and I are both grad students and couldn't imagine having to deal with the financial burden on top of such a difficult situation. We're wishing you the best.

Your intrepid spirit in life so far has already proven that you've got it too. You will come through this stronger and with an even greater gift for helping others. I will continue to pray for your recovery and a wonderful future ahead.

Hi Greg, I guess you are anxious to be home, although from the pictures on this web site, you are very popular there at Magee and everyone has been very attentive and loving. We will wait to visit once you get home and are settled in. A day does not go by that Carl and I don't think about you. Love you lots!

Dear Greg: I am Martha Kienzle's mother and just made a contribution to your fund (I'm glad she forwarded me the link). Martha told me many things about you before your injury and, of course, we have discussed you a great deal since. I have always wanted to meet you, and hope to get that opportunity in the future. Before I became a lawyer, I was a trauma/ER and NICU nurse for fifteen years. I took care of many people with cord injuries and I know so much of what you are going through. What I have learned about your character is that you will move through this and become the stellar physician you are meant to be. Please let me know if there is anything else I can do to help you. A friend of Martha's is a friend of mine. Much love and support to you, Greg. Susan Frye, Iowa City.
