STORY: As many of you know, my husband Jim has been battling end stage renal disease since he was 18. Despite his illness, Jim worked hard for 30 years and had a successful career in sales. Just three months after we married in 2006, a medication error caused his kidneys to fail completely. Despite every effort to treat it, Jim’s symptoms worsened and he became fully disabled and bed-ridden. Jim began dialysis and joined the transplant waiting list. For the last four years, Jim diligently spent 10 hours per night hooked to a dialysis machine.
Jim never lost his determination and positive attitude. Thankfully, on April 16, 2013 the long-awaited call to save his life came – he received a kidney transplant! It was a sad day for the donor family, but they chose to give the gift of life and we are eternally grateful. The transplant was a great success and Jim’s new kidney is functioning extremely well.
Jim’s motivation has always been his loving family and friends. Our family has been working tirelessly to pay for his treatment and insurance premiums. Even with insurance, medications and frequent appointments in Fort Worth costs thousands per month. Transplant aftercare is extremely critical to maintaining Jim’s health – we make the 120 mile round-trip to Fort Worth three days per week for his follow-up appointments at the transplant hospital. We have always faced every challenge as a family, cheering each other on with our rally-cry of “Team Spina!”, but this current financial challenge is one we cannot meet without your help.
To help with this burden, a fundraising campaign in Jim’s honor has been established with HelpHOPELive, a nonprofit organization that has been assisting the transplant community for 30 years. All donations are tax-deductible, are held by HelpHOPELive in the South-Central Kidney Transplant Fund, and are administered by HelpHOPELive for transplant-related expenses only. Thank you for joining and supporting Team Spina!
Sincerely,

Many procedures later but we're still going strong! Jim has been steadfast and has a great attitude. We're hoping that this latest procedure will be the permanent fix we've been hoping for. Thanks for all the support, love and well wishes!
Jim's new kidney is doing well. All of the surgeries (17 to date) over 3 yrs and medication changes have taken their toll but Jim continues face each challenge with a positive attitude. We appreciate all your support; it really helps with bills from 4 hospitals and countless doctors so we can better afford his costly transplant meds. They are still changing his meds, each which comes with new round of side effects. Jim is so resilient and we look forward to a healthier 2016!
Jim's major surgery Feb 2015 was a success! We are so grateful. It's been a challenging road for 2 years with so many procedures and medical expenses but we made it through. Jim is recovering and the kidney is healthy. Every donation helps with Jim's extensive hospital bills and transplant medications. Thank you for all the love and support! #TeamSpina
Jim's next major surgery is Jan 29, 2015. It has some risk involved but we are hopeful it will be successful. Prayers and well wishes welcome. We are working with a specialized surgical team at UT Southwestern. Thanks for all the love and support!
Update: The kidney is working great but Jim is still undergoing more procedures for complications related to the transplant. Jim is so positive and resilient; he's my hero! After 16 months of procedures, we continue our resolve to help get Jim through all of this so he can enjoy a healthy new life. We thank our thoughtful contributors for helping us weather the storms of medical costs. Every contribution helps. Thank you for your support and well wishes!!
Team Spina! Jim's last surgery 5/8/14. A rare surgical technique performed to fix all previous complications. So far recovering well! Seeing the finish line. Yay!!
Jim's got one more surgery that is designed to fix the complications he's had. We are very optimistic that this will help Jim recover and stay well. We are grateful for all your support! Love you!!
Jim conquered more complications and continues to do well. The kidney is still working wonderfully with Jim but we had other types of complications in the past few months. It's been 10 procedures so far but Jim keeps facing them all with a great attitude and resolve. Jim is faithful with his medications and follow-up clinic visits. The medication side effects were really intense - he had to inject himself in the stomach x2 per day for a while. He's an inspiration. We appreciate so much the love and support of our family and friends.
Jim conquered another hospitalization
We had a brief crisis last month in which Jim ended up in the ER with a high fever and then back in Baylor All Saints. He overcame an infection and some other complications but he weathered the storm like a champ. No kidney rejection, which is always good news! We're focused on building Jim's strength and he continues to heal!! What an amazing man he is!
Thanks for all the support, well wishes and help with the dogs. We have such an amazing family and great friends. We love you all and miss you so much. Yes, we're keeping Jim at home to avoid infections but as Jim recovers, we'll be connecting more with you all! It's been quite a rough ride at times but Team Spina prevails. Love you!
Jim conquered a series of complications!
Jim went back into the hospital this month to have another surgery for a complication from the transplant surgery. Good news is no rejection of the kidney! It keeps working perfectly while the rest of his body adjusts to the numerous medications and side effects. Way to go baby!!
Jim went back into the hospital this month to have another surgery for a complication from the transplant surgery. After a number of complications, Jim fought his way through 3 weeks in the hospital. He's home again with MORE medications. Now he injects himself twice a day in the stomach! The most consistent good news in our lives is the kidney functioning!! Keeps working perfectly while the rest of his body adjusts to the numerous medications and side effects. No rejection of the kidney. We are so grateful. Jim is the bravest and toughest man I've ever known! Way to go baby!!
Two successful months after transplant!
Thanks for all the love and support. Jim's kidney is still functioning very well. He is experiencing lots of medication side effects but Jim is coping very well. We joke constantly about how much Jim's market value has increased with the cost of the kidney and medications. Lots of humor left over from the car business! Haha! Seriously, he is worth everything in the world to us!
Jim got his Peritoneal Dialysis hose removed!
On May 28, 2013, our 7 year wedding anniversary, Jim went in for scheduled surgery to have the dialysis hose removed from his stomach! We were thrilled! It was a perfect anniversary gift! It will be so nice this summer when he's healed and can swim again. They also fixed a hernia caused by the dialysis fluid pumped into him over the years. For now, the medication side effects of the anti-rejection drugs are very intense for the next several months so please understand if Jim can't email with his blurred vision or consistently answer calls while resting. Thank you for the donations, dinners and well wishes! You guys are the best! Check out our photos on Jim's main page. Avoid the "Close Up' album if you're squeamish :-)
