I am writing to you on behalf of my husband Egland Stephens, who also goes by the name Steve. He is just sixty-years-old. We are happily married with five children. Some of you may know Steve through his job of many years, a lead carpenter on all the bridges in South Florida.
In 1991, Steve was diagnosed with diabetes. He has been struggling with it for many years. By 2006 the kidney disease had taken its toll creating serious kidney problems. In 2010 Steve’s doctors diagnosed him with kidney failure and he has been on dialysis ever since. He has been through the extensive evaluation process and for the past year has been on the waiting list at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. Steve is desperately in need of a kidney transplant to survive.
Transplants, however, are extremely expensive, and costs can be devastating. Even though he has Medicare/Humana insurance, there are many out-of-pocket expenses such as travel to and from the center, lodging for Steve before and after the transplant and immunosuppresent medications he will need for the rest of his life. We are stretched to the limit as I try to be Steve’s caregiver and the wage earner, sometimes working two jobs to survive. We have come to realize this is a huge challenge that we cannot meet alone.
To help defray such expenses, a fundraising campaign in Steve’s honor has been established with HelpHOPELive, a nonprofit organization that has been assisting the transplant community for over 30 years. All donations are tax deductible, are held by HelpHOPELive in the Southeast Kidney Transplant Fund, and are administered by HelpHOPELive for transplant-related expenses only. If you would like to help and are able to make a contribution, please:At times like this, the help of family, friends and the community is crucial to help ensure a successful outcome. Your financial gifts and prayers are greatly appreciated.
Warm regards,
Jacquelin Stephens (386-313-6853)
