In 2001, Crystal Torres became my college roommate and lifelong friend. From early childhood, Crystal has battled several medical conditions, including gastro-esophageal reflux, lactose allergy, severe migraines, allergy induced asthma, and chronic bronchitis. Crystal never expected that treating these plaguing medical conditions with modern day medications would possibly contribute to a battle for her life. Now at 29, Crystal is in need of a kidney transplant. She is receiving dialysis at home for nine hours a night to sustain her life until she can receive this life saving kidney.
Crystal not only wants to live but needs to live – to care for her two biological children and the two family members she is generously adopting into her family to keep them from a life in the foster care system. When Crystal brought these additional members into her family, she knew that her family budget would be much tighter to make ends meet. She had faith that God would provide for her family’s needs, but she had no idea that she would soon face such a life threatening and financially draining condition, renal failure.
Crystal now needs your financial support. The family is hoping that a living donor match can be found this year. Transplants, however, are extremely expensive, and costs can be devastating. Even though her insurance company will cover a significant portion of the procedure, there are payments for hospital visits, clinics, and medications needed for the rest of her life that insurance will not cover. These medical necessities total up to approximately $2,500 per month for the rest of her life.
To help reduce this financial burden, a fundraising campaign in Crystal’s honor has been established with HelpHOPELive, a nonprofit organization that has been assisting the transplant community for 30 years. All donations are tax-deductible, are held by HelpHOPELive in the South-Atlantic Kidney Transplant Fund, and are administered by HelpHOPELive for transplant-related expenses only. Won’t you please make a donation?

When I was involved in a life threatening car accident following our freshman year in college, Crystal was the first to offer her prayers and support. Now she is the one in need and I am pleading that you help me to help her. Crystal, her family, and I have faith that there are kind and giving people who will help her to manage this seemingly insurmountable medical and financial battle.
Thank you for your kindness and generosity in helping give Crystal a second chance at life.
Warm regards,
Jennifer Carnes
2014 Scarf sale is underway. Email me and we can set up a time for you to check out the available colors.
The Mooresville Yard Sale is this Saturday and Sunday. It is looking to be huge with lots of great stuff. In conjunction with the yard sale, Lili will be working a baked goods and snack table both days. We will have an awesome variety of breakfast and then desert items. Come out and look around. Thank you all for your support and hard work.
Great News everyone! My brother has been matched as a donor and is working to fulfill the prerequisites to be able to go through with the donation. I am so proud of you Brandon. You made a decision and you moved, what an act. Hopefully it will be this year, love you all.
The ruffle scarf sale is going strong and we are meeting the need for Christmas orders very well. People really love this product right now. Ask around and see if anyone would like a ruffled scarf. We have a variety of colors and I will be glad to look for others. Great Idea, Granny!
As Thanks Giving and Christmas approach, many in the family are brainstorming on the next phase of the fundraising. It has been almost a year so we feel the need to work hard. We are all praying that a living donor will be available this year and that many things will move forward. Ideas are always welcome, volunteers always necessary and donations are dependent on us asking everyone. Take time to ask yourself and those around you to donate to help us pay for these medical expenses. Donations are tax deductible and this is the perfect time of year to take advantage of that. Even items from businesses are tax deductible as gifts that we can raffle, auction or give away as prizes at events. Every little bit counts. Pray about it please.
Thanks to everyone that has helped so far. It is really great to see that we can all depend on each other in our times of greatest need. I have not been feeling all that well lately and I feel the need to be close to family at all times. There is still no confirmed matches for a possible living donor but we continue to hold on to our hopes and trust in God. We love you all!
