Since her injury, Kaley has made tremendous progress. Although her life has changed in many different ways and will never be the same, she continues to have a positive attitude and has many hopes and dreams for her future. She began college this year with the hopes of becoming a rehabilitation psychologist so that she may help others who face life-changing injury such as hers.
Even with insurance, Kaley faces many uninsured injury-related expenses for the rest of her life. Through fundraisers, donations and the loving support of friends and family, Kaley has been able to participate in intensive physical therapy at Project Walk which has resulted in her significant improvement — ongoing fundraising assures that Kaley can continue at Project Walk, which is not covered by insurance and purchase medical supplies as needed.
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that a spinal cord injury patient will have between $500,000 and $3 million in lifetime uninsured injury-related expenses. Project Walk alone costs in upwards of $1300 per month.
To assist with these uninsured therapies and other expenses, a fundraising campaign in Kaley’s honor has been established with HelpHOPELive (formerly NTAF), a nonprofit organization that has been assisting the transplant community for nearly 30 years. In 2000, they expanded their mission to include those who have sustained a catastrophic injury. All contributions are tax deductible, are held by HelpHOPELive in the Southwest Spinal Cord Injury Fund, and are administered by HelpHOPELive for injury-related expenses only. Hi Kaley,
Wondering if you also have neurological pain, as I do from my SCI.
If so, I will be glad to trade tips for pain reduction with you as nerve pain is tough to cope with.
Thanks, Zelinda
