I am writing this letter on behalf of my husband Brad Vernet. Brad is on the active waiting list for a life-saving kidney transplant at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. Brad has had kidney disease for 20 years and was born with just one kidney. In the past year Brad’s kidney function has declined rapidly. We are also actively searching for a living donor that will be a match.
Brad is an amazing husband, partner and wonderful father to our children, Emmye, (16) and Martin, (12). He is a dedicated and respected seventh grade science teacher at West Side Middle School bringing excitement and creativity to his classroom. Brad is kind, has a wonderful sense of humor and his upbeat attitude is phenomenal.
Thankfully, Brad has insurance that will cover the transplant itself. However, there are many expenses that we will incur that are not covered and must be paid out of pocket. Some of these are co-pays, deductibles, and travel to and from the hospital in Boston; relocation at the time of transplant and Brad will be on expensive anti-rejection medications for the rest of his life. We need your help.
A fundraising campaign in Brad’s honor has been established with HelpHOPELive, a nonprofit organization that has been assisting the transplant community for 30 years. All donations are tax-deductible, are held by HelpHOPELive in the Northeast Kidney Transplant Fund, and are administered by HelpHOPELive for transplant-related expenses only. Please consider making an end-of-year tax deductible contribution today.
A fundraising committee has been formed and we are planning several exciting and fun events. If you would like to help or do a fundraiser please contact me or my sister Tara Healey at [email protected]
On behalf of Brad, myself and our children, thank you for your ongoing support, kindness and generosity.

It has been close to a year ago that we sent this letter to friends and family looking for a donor. Since then here's what's happened... Brad received a kidney from a dear friend, we raised enough money to cover uninsured medical expenses, we rekindled old friendships and made many new friends!
Brad and his donor Mike are doing extraordinarily well. We are so grateful!
Congratulations on finding a donor. I wish you the best with the surgery and recovery.
