Dear Friends and Family,
I am writing this letter for the man I love – my devoted and loving husband, a proud father, happy grandpa and cancer survivor. His story is not complicated. In 2009, Mike had his left lung upper lobe removed due to cancer. It was during this surgery that doctors discovered that Mike had Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and emphysema. The COPD is now in its worst stage and Mike is currently living with only 16% lung capacity, having to use oxygen, a home ventilator and take numerous medications – all with the knowledge that his only hope for survival is to have a lung transplant.
This diagnosis has affected Mike in many ways – medically he was forced to retire at age 56 and now spends many of his days at various medical appointments, not to mention the various hospital stays. What
friends find amazing is that Mike continues to keep his positive attitude and continues to assist others as he has always done – helping to provide air conditioing to a family living in a small trailer during the terrible summer heat, or annoymously taking care of Thanksgiving dinner for a a local family, or donate to St. Jude’s, the Red Cross and many others. He wants to remain strong to fight one more battle for all of his family.
We have recently moved to Florida to live with his son and daughter-in-law and grandchildren and to be close to other family members. MIke says that whatever time God gives him he wants to spend that time surrounded by the best and most loving people any man could have. His example has led his entire family to become organ donors as well.
Even with insurance, Mike will have many uncovered transplant-related expenses such as: co-pays and deductibles, docotor visits and the costly immunossuppressant medcations that he will need to take for the rest of his life.
To help offset such expenses, a fundraising campaign in Mike’s honor has been established with HelpHOPELive, a trusted nonprofit organization that has been providing community-based fundraising guidance to patients and their families for more than 30 years. All donations are tax-deductible, are held by HelpHOPELive, are held by HelpHOPELive in the Southeast Lung Transplant Fund, and are administered by HelpHOPELive for transplant-related expenses only. On behalf of my dear husband, I thank you for your kind support and generosity at this time.
