I have great news to share with you! On May 28th my wonderful husband, John McElroy, received the gift of life – a life-saving double lung transplant. He is doing well but we know he has a very long road of recovery ahead of him.
John is a loving husband, father of four, grandfather of three, true friend to many, an avid Harley Man, and adventurer. Exploring caves as a young man, John contracted histoplasmosis (aka Spelunker’s Lung and Cave Disease) and had one lobe of a lung removed 12 years ago.
After losing our home and belongings in a house fire last year, we were on a cross-country trip looking for a good climate for John to live in. While in Arizona, John’s lung condition and health rapidly deteriorated, he was hospitalized and within two weeks was airlifted to the University of Kentucky Medical Center and placed on the active transplant waiting list. Within two months he received his transplant.
As you can imagine, John’s strenuous journey has led to staggering medical bills. Already, thousands of dollars of uninsured medical expenses have accumulated and will continue to grow because of the need for follow-up appointments and anti-rejection medications. Even with insurance, the cost of transplantation is overwhelming. Because of this, we must continue to rely on those with giving and caring hearts. This is where your help is desperately needed.
A fundraising campaign in John’s honor has been established with HelpHOPELive, a nonprofit organization that has been assisting the transplant community for 30 years. All contributions are tax-deductible, are held by HelpHOPELive in South-Atlantic Lung Transplant Fund, and are administered by HelpHOPELive for transplant-related expenses only. Any size gift will be so appreciated.
On behalf of John and myself, thank you for your kindness, support and generosity.

Update....... John McElroy is through surgery and back to his room and everything went excellent! He's doing just fine! Docs said procedure was relatively simple and all was a success!
When John got to UK's ICU, he was in Bed D. After a few weeks, he was moved to Bed M. When he asked why we were moving him, I told him because Bed M would be the room for miracles so that's where he needed to be. I was right (as usual! ) and we got our miracle!
Thank you God for your countless blessings and so many answered prayers!!
Good morning all. They just now took John McElroy back to OR for the lung closure procedure. This was supposed to happen this past Thursday, the day following transplant, but John was so critical at that point that it was postponed until they felt he was more stable. It is expected to be a 2 to 4 hour procedure. Please pray all goes smoothly, with no complications. John is a trooper...... absolutely and without doubt the strongest person I have ever known so I know he'll come out of this just fine and ready to run!
My final request, please, is do not call me right now. His team has me in a private room, all by myself, in an attempt to let me get some rest, which I desperately need. I am fine and am looking forward to some peaceful alone time. As soon as John returns to his room, I will let all know. Thank you for your understanding and continued prayers for John and for me!

Today is officially day 69 in ICU and it's hard to believe all that has happened in that sort amount of time that has literally felt like forever. There has been heartache, sadness, confusion, frustration, despair and anguish coupled with much joy, elation, happiness, gratitude, humility, faith and hope, all mixed together like some crazy cocktail that ended with a complete miracle.
After 20 days on the official regional transplant list, John had his bilateral lung transplant on Wednesday, May 28th. Surgery proved to be long with some severe complications but John, being the ultimate fighter he is and by the amazing Grace of God, pulled through. The few days since transplant have also proven to be complicated, scary and very critical, however we've had many small victories and doctors are hopeful.
The biggest concerns remaining are brain and kidney functions. He is now slightly responding and reacting to stimuli. He recognizes voices and people and is starting to be able to follow commands. Neurology was called in and the EEG and CT Scan showed no abnormalities so that's a blessing. The kidneys may need dialysis but they are hoping to prevent that by keeping him on fluids that flush toxins. It's really an hour by hour situation where those are concerned but renal team is also hopeful.
We're certainly not out of the woods yet but things are improving. It's a very slow process and there are still many hurdles to jump and he's here, he's alive, he's breathing on his own, he's fever free and he's the absolute strongest and bravest and toughest man I have ever in my life known and he is going to be just fine because God's got this!
Thank you for continued prayers and I'll keep updates coming. And thank you God for answered prayers and your magnificent mercy. And thank you, from the bottom of my heart and with all of my being, to the 56 year old female from West Virginia, who gave my husband life after hers was cut tragically short. God bless you and your family.
The email in the post below should be: helpjohnmcelroy@gmail.com - Thanks!
John lost a lot of blood during the transplant surgery and he will need a follow up surgery 1 or 2 June. So keep the prayers coming.
On a positive note, his new lungs are working - and he's breathing on his own!!! He's becoming more alert and his spirits are lifted knowing so many people are sending prayers and love to him and also lending support to Kelly.
If you have any questions, please direct them to Aunt Michele at 408.802.2116 or helpjohn@gmail.com rather than trying to reach Kelly, as she is dedicating all her time and energy to being by John's; he is still in critical condition.
