On a day like any other, I was cutting the grass when it became difficult to breathe and my heart was racing. An hour later I found myself in the Emergency Room and was informed that my hemoglobin level was extremely low. I was placed on dialysis the very next day. I will never forget Catina and Ayden looking at me with tears in their eyes as the doctor gave us the news. I looked at them and said, “Don’t cry, God is in control and He will get ALL the Glory at the end of the day.”
Always, our faith and family come first. We are actively involved at Higher Living Christian Church and other various volunteer activities throughout our community of McDonough, GA. At any given time I can be found with Warriors for Life, a Young Men’s Mentor Ministry. Outside of Warriors, I coach youth basketball and enjoy playing sports with my son or being outside riding bikes with my entire family. But, it has been a long 22 months on dialysis, which I receive at home for nine hours every night. I have good days and bad days; have battled high blood pressure; and have gone through rough periods when it didn’t appear that anyone might consider becoming my living donor. My dear wife did volunteer to be the donor, but she was not a match. Then, out of the blue, my uncle Joe “Les” Walsh, called and asked if he could be tested to see if he could be my donor. I was overwhelmed by the offer, let alone when I received the call that Les was a match and had been approved for the transplant surgery.
Even with insurance, I will have many uninsured transplant-related expenses such as: co-pays and deductibles, doctor visits, travel and temporary relocation to UPMC in Pittsburgh for the transplant and the costly immunosuppressant medications that I will need to take for the rest of my life (and will cost me $2000/ month for the first three months).
To help with this financial burden, a fundraising campaign in my honor has been established with HelpHOPELive, a nonprofit organization that has been assisting the transplant community for more than 30 years. All donations are tax-deductible, are held by HelpHOPELive in the Southeast Kidney Transplant Fund, and are administered by HelpHOPELive for transplant-related expenses only. Your contribution is greatly appreciated.

I would like to thank you all in advance for your support, and my uncle Joe “Les” Walsh as well, as he is not only giving me my second chance at life with the gift of his kidney, but is accommodating my family during my recovery which eliminates a huge expense for us.
Sincerely,
Joe Lightner
Wow!!!! What an AWESOME week, my Uncle Joe and I went into the hospital on Thursday the 22nd and had a very successful transplant. As a matter of fact we were both home by Sunday night. The family and friend support has been overwhelming. None of this would have been possible without the Grace of God and I thank everyone for their prayers, calls, and concern. Special thanks to my beautiful wife for never leaving my side while in the hospital. Thank all of you who have and will donate, medications alone are running over $300.00 a month so your donations will be going to a great cause.
Well, here we are after a week delay and an evaluation by a cardiologist I have been cleared for transplant on Thursday. I will be admitted tomorrow for a round of dialysis before surgery. Thanks for all that everyone has done.
Well everyone, my family and I have been in town for a few days. My Uncle and I have had our pre operation evaluation, and I had a final stress test preformed yesterday. We are due at the hospital at 5am on Thursday for surgery. Here we Go!
Well it has been a long wait! I just received a phone call from UPMC and I am now activated on the transplant list. I am waiting for a activation letter in b the mail and a phone call for scheduling. We are looking for a date around the first of the year after the holidays. Thanks again Uncle Les (Joe)!!!!!!!!!
Well everyone we are still waiting for a date, having a insurance coverage hold up that looks like it won't be solved until mid September. In the meantime thank you ALL for your support!! I'm still feeling great and keeping busy and trying to be as patient as I can be.
I can honestly say I am truly blown away by the support that everyone gas shown in the first week. I have now been cleared by the dermatologist for surgery, and just waiting for the scheduling team. THANKS AGAIN for all the support, words of encouragement, and prayers for me and my family,! YOU ARE ALL AWESOME!!!!
I just wanted to take a moment to say "thank you" to everyone for your overwhelming support. We appreciate every prayer, word of encouragement and generous donations in just the first few days of this fundraising campaign.

Joe,
Gary and I met Joe & Laura 10 years ago while camping on the islands of Lake George. We continue to meet every year when they are up in our neck of the woods! We will boatup the lake to their campsite yelling "HELLO PITTSBURGH' to which they respond "HELLO YORKTOWN' - and then the fun begins.
We wish you a speedy recovery which will afford you a lifetime of creating similar memories!
