Yan and his family started their journey in the former USSR, now Ukraine. He studied medicine and throughout the last 30 years, worked as a nurse and massage therapist helping others in need. The family immigrated to Israel in the 1990’s where Yan and his wife Jana raised two children: Michael and Irina Ostrovsky. In 2002, following many wonderful years in the Holy Land, the family moved to Houston, TX to begin the next chapter in their life, “the cowboy lifeâ€.
About 27 years ago, while living in the USSR, Yan contracted Hepatitis C during surgery for a stomach ulcer. Through the years, the disease progressed and destroyed his liver. For the past two years, Yan has been treated and evaluated at one of the top transplant centers, St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital, and was placed on the transplant waiting list. Though the date of the impending surgery is unknown, Yan and his family remain very optimistic. “It’s really the small things in life that bring me joy: watching my kids become the people that I envisioned them to become, and also fishing.â€
To help with the financial burden of Yan’s uninsured medical expenses, a fundraising campaign in his honor has been established with HelpHOPELive, a trusted nonprofit organization that has been providing community-based fundraising guidance to patients and their families for more than 30 years. All donations are tax-deductible, are held by HelpHOPELive in the South-Central Liver Transplant Fund, and are administered by HelpHOPELive for transplant-related expenses only. Please, consider a contribution.
On behalf of my Dad and his family, we thank you in advance for your care, support, and contributions; they are critical to the overall success of Yan’s struggle. Please keep checking this page as we will be updating the campaign from time to time and posting information on fundraising events.
With sincere gratitude,
Yan, Jana, Eira and Michael Ostrovsky
