I am writing to you on behalf of Maryanne West, a friend from school and church. On January 16, Maryanne suffered a life-changing spinal cord injury after falling down the stairs in her home leaving her paralyzed below the shoulders. Maryanne has spent the last five months in medical and rehabilitation hospitals, but returned home on June 17.
Maryanne graduated from Cherry Hill High School West and Temple University. She and her husband Rich have two active teenage sons, Richard and Matthew. They are a busy family, involved in baseball, basketball, roller hockey, Boy Scouts and youth groups at Trinity Lutheran. Maryanne volunteered for many years at Bridle Path Elementary on the Home and School Board, including a term as its President. She also served as Den Mother for Pack 229 and at her church’s nursery. Most recently, Maryanne worked as a cafeteria aide at various elementary schools and Penndale Middle School.
In spite of the many struggles that she faces, Maryanne remains hopeful that she will be able to return to a productive life in the community through the support of family and friends. Maryanne has worked tirelessly in her therapy programs that have strengthened her body and helped her regain some movement in her legs, arms and hands.
Despite the significant improvement in her condition, Maryanne continues to need full-time care. The Wests have hired a live-in-home health aide, which has to be paid for out-of-pocket as insurance coverage has run out. Maryanne and Rich are hoping to purchase a used wheelchair accessible van that will provide them with greater mobility and independence. They are also hoping to add a wheelchair accessible bathroom on the first floor of their home.
To help with the financial burden of Maryanne’s uninsured expenses, a fundraising campaign in her honor has been established with HelpHOPELive, a trusted nonprofit organization that has been providing community-based fundraising guidance to patients and their families for more than 30 years. All donations are tax-deductible, are held by HelpHOPELive in the Mid-Atlantic Spinal Cord Injury Fund, and are administered by HelpHOPELive for injury-related expenses only.
Some of Maryanne’s friends are planning fundraising events in the fall and winter. We could certainly use your help! Please email me at [email protected] to volunteer or donate any raffle or auction items or services. Thank you so much for any help that you can give to this wonderful family!
Sincerely,
Beth Staab [email protected] 215-393-7847

Rich & Maryanne's speeches from Trivia Night:
Rich: "Thank you all for being here tonight. Maryanne and I are in awe and are humbled by all of the support you have provided for us.
Words cannot adequately express the deep gratitude that we feel for everyone here tonight.
Thank you to those who worked so hard to make this night special:
Thank you to Pat Tranzilli, Cindy Haley, Giselle Schwartz, Lisa Wildman, Marie Sayers, Joyce Abbott, Lora Yanagawa, Tammy Johnson, Jennifer Karpf, Sue Weiner, Sharon Palm, Mary Wagner and a special thank you to Beth Staab whose remarkable efforts to organize, plan and manage this wonderful event is deeply appreciated. Thank you so much for making this an evening that we will never forget. Beth...you did a phenomenal job.
A special thank you also to Theresa Romano who organized and communicated the meal schedule that has been incredibly helpful to our family. Thank you to all of you who have taken time out from your very busy lives to provide us with fantastic meals. I truly don't know what we would have done without your help.
Thank you to my sister Barbara and her husband Mike and their family...their son Michael and his wife Missy. Their help and advice with the many decisions that needed to be made has been tremendously helpful. Thank you.
Just a quick note on our sons, Richard and Matthew. They have handled this challenging situation exceptionally well. They have handled more responsibilities and chores around the house and have helped with Maryanne's care. They are becoming good cooks especially using the outdoor grill. Maryanne and I are very lucky to have such wonderful sons.
Maryanne is a very special woman as many of us know. She is full of life and energy and loves the company of people, friends, neighbors, family and especially children. She lights up whenever she is near a child or young adult. When we arrived home from our first visit at Moss Rehab last week, the children living in our cul-de-sac all came running up to her yelling her name...Mrs. West, Mrs. West. Each of them had a story to tell of their day at school and the bus ride home. Maryanne listened intently and provided sage advice.
We will be standing in line at a Phillies game and Maryanne will strike up a long running conversation with a child behind us...asking about school, teachers, does he/she play baseball, who is his/her favorite player, etc. Richard will turn to me and say;
"Who does that. It's embarrassing. Make her stop."
Of course, there is no stopping Maryanne...particularly when it comes to children. She loved being the President of the Home and School Association. She wants to be involved with making a difference in a child's life and making it better somehow and in turn, make all of our lives better and more enjoyable.
Being around Maryanne makes my life more enjoyable, more fun and exciting even today. She brightens up my life in so many ways...she has a tremendously high level of energy and has always focused her attention on her children. She has a great sense of humor and loves the company of her friends and family.
Her situation does not seem to have significantly diminished her joy of life. She continues to laugh and enjoy the company of family and friends. She remains determined to recover as much as possible. She never complains and is never negative even though no one would blame her if she did. Her strength and desire to recover is exceptionally strong and an inspiration to me and our sons.
She is thankful for all of the help she receives....she thanks me for giving her a glass of water, for covering her with a blanket, for helping her with her therapy exercises, for taking her to doctor visits and to Richard and Matthew's baseball and hockey games, putting on her shoes...she thanks me for everything. I continually tell her that I am her husband, you don't need to thank me....I am supposed to do these things and I want to do them for you. And for some reason, I find myself wanting to be with her more now than ever before.
She remains determined to recover as much as possible. She has already far exceeded what the doctors at Temple told us. She has significantly more movement in her legs than they anticipated. They did not expect much movement in her arms at all...not only does she have significant movement but she can lift weights with her arms and can now feed herself.
The therapists at Magee, Luther Woods in Hatboro and the wonderful therapists who came to our home (Susan and Heather Pelletier) have told us that they have been provided therapy services for many, many years and that Maryanne has demonstrated the most determination, will and desire to recover that they have ever seen. Her spirit and attitude remain amazingly upbeat and positive.
Which brings me to you. This night means more to us than you will ever know. Much of Maryanne's strength and desire to recover is coming from all of you in this room tonight. It is your remarkable kindness and generosity and support that helps to keep Maryanne's spirits high and inspires her to work even harder during her therapy sessions. Your support and kindness is helping Maryanne recover faster than she otherwise would. We thank you more than you can possibly know for helping her to heal. We believe that with the continued support of our friends and family, she will achieve a high level of independence. If anyone can recover and walk again from this injury, it will be Maryanne and she has you to thank for giving her the support and inspiration to recover. Thank you so very much from the bottom of our hearts. How can we ever repay you."
Maryanne: "Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I am humbled and appreciative of all of the love and support I have received from family and friends. I just want you all to know how special you are to me.
As Rich said earlier, I want to make sure that everyone knows how much work and effort the committee members have put into planning tonight's event. Beth Staab and everyone on the committee went above and beyond to organize and manage this wonderful event. To take so much time out of your daily lives for me, I will be eternally grateful. The sacrifices that have been made on my behalf have left me in awe of everyone here tonight.
I can't get over how much help and support I have had since the accident. From friends who visit to rides for Richard and Matthew to meals being delivered to rides to Moss Rehab to the ramp being installed in front of the house so I can take my daily walks to the raffle at Home Run Derby to help us purchase a manual wheelchair to the portable ramp which has helped me visit several of my closest friends.
It's easy to feel isolated in the situation I am in but I haven't felt that at all. Friends have brought lunch for me, the phone calls I receive are appreciated, etc. The amount of support I have had has been tremendous and words cannot express how much I am grateful for all of your help.
Please enjoy this evening and please know that I love each and every one of you here tonight."
Rich asked me to post this message of gratitude:
"Maryanne and I overwhelmed with the tremendous support we continue to receive. Thank you so very much for everyone who so generously contributed and donated their time to plan and organize one of the best nights of our lives with Trivia Night in October. That night meant more to us than you will ever know.
We had a wonderful time…in fact, we never had so much fun losing in our lives (we came in 5th place). We are overwhelmed by the generosity and kindness of all of our friends. Your exceptionally generous contributions have helped to pay for our medical expenses as well as the wheelchair van.
We also are very appreciative of the Holiday Craft Show at Trinity Lutheran Church. It was a tremendous event and we very much enjoyed talking to all of the vendors and everyone who helped to organize the event.
A very special thank you to Beth Staab for giving us so much of her time, talent and ability to spearhead and organize these wonderful events. We are forever indebted to Beth and everyone who participated in the committee to organize these events.
Maryanne started to receive outpatient therapy last month at Moss Rehab in Elkins Park on Wednesdays and Fridays. The therapists have her standing which is a great accomplishment. She is also receiving therapy and training on how to access and use the internet. She has started to type and respond to e-mails which is exciting. It will take some time before she becomes proficient but no one is working harder at healing from this type of injury than Maryanne. A very special thank you to our friends who have driven Maryanne to her sessions: Cindi, Lisa, Tami, Courtney, Andrea, Krystal, Jim, Bruce, Giselle and Bob.
Maryanne’s spirits remain positive. Her strength and desire to recover is coming from all of you, her friends and neighbors. We are eternally grateful for all of the time you have taken from your very busy lives to help us. Your remarkable kindness, generosity and support keeps her spirits high and inspires her to work harder during her therapy sessions. She is recovering faster than she otherwise would due to your continued support. We thank you more than you can know for helping to maintain her positive outlook and inspiring her to work hard. If anyone can recover from this type of injury, it will be Maryanne. Thank you so very much from the bottom of our hearts.
THANK YOU to everyone who helped make he Holiday Craft Fair at Trinity Lutheran Church on November 22 a HUGE success!

An important update & request from Rich West:
Thank you so much for all of your support. We are deeply appreciative of all of the tremendous help we are receiving. Maryanne’s recovery would not be as far along as it is without your help. All of your support makes us feel that we are not alone which takes a tremendous amount of pressure from our shoulders. Thank you so very much.
Home therapy will end shortly. We are looking for drivers who would be willing to take Maryanne to Moss Rehab in Elkins Park for outpatient therapy 1-2 days per week. The driver would drive our 2012 Dodge Caravan wheelchair van. The trip is 19 miles…approx 40 – 45 minutes. The therapy would be 2 hours…then she would need a ride home. The total amount of time would be approx 4 hours. Our live in nursing assistant would accompany Maryanne on the trip. We would be glad to pay for this service. If you are interested, please contact Rich West at 215-313-4295. Thank you again for all of your help.
Save the Date! October 11th at the Empress Rood.
Come out and enjoy a night of Trivia, good food and friends -- all in honor of our good friend Maryanne.
Details in the Fundraising Activities section.
Maryanne's fall occurred on January 16th and has left her paralyzed below the shoulders. After a week of hospitalization at Temple and 5 months of rehabilitation at Magee and Luther Woods in Hatboro, PA., she returned home on Tuesday, June 17.
Recovery from this type of serious spinal cord injury varies from person to person. Her progress has been very impressive so far and she will continue to receive therapy at home up to 6 hours per week.
The therapists at Luther Woods Rehab have told us that they have provided therapy services for many years with many different and difficult injuries, but they have never met anyone with the drive, determination, inner strength and spirit that Maryanne has demonstrated. She has worked incredibly hard to recover as completely as possible and will undoubtedly continue to do so.
Her spirit and attitude remain amazingly upbeat and positive. She has been remarkably positive through this situation and confident that she will reach her goal of achieving some level of independence.
Maryanne continues to need 24-hour/7-day care. A live-in home health aide to assist the family in her care. The family is looking to purchase a used wheelchair accessible van and to renovate their first floor to include an accessible shower.
Maryanne is a dear friend to many! We've formed a group called "Friends of Maryanne" who are committed to help her family afford some of the unreimbursed expenses associated with her accident, described under "Fundraising Activities" on this site.
