As many of you know, our daughter Paige Moore Holder was diagnosed with end-stage renal disease during the summer of 2013. After much thought and prayer, Paige decided to end her 22 year battle with Type 1 diabetes by having a kidney and pancreas transplant. This would increase her chances for a longer, healthier life. Thus began the long and arduous process for medical clearance and transplant listing. To ensure good health until transplant, Paige began peritoneal dialysis at her home in January of this year.
On March 21, 2014 Paige was notified by Duke University Medical Center that she was officially listed to receive BOTH organs. The average wait time for kidney and pancreas transplant is 12-18 months. Exactly 14 days later Duke called to say organs were available and a match. A successful transplant took place on April 5th. We like to refer to this journey of Paige’s second chance as Moorelife.
The costs of double organ transplant and anti-rejection medications are astronomical. Many recipients have years to financially prepare, we only had two weeks. Insurance limitations and some expenses have no provision at all. The cost of living in Durham for 55+ days created an additional burden. Paige must take costly anti-rejection medications for the rest of her life, plus travel to Duke for repeated follow up visits.
To help with the financial burden of Paige’s uninsured expenses, a fundraising campaign in her honor has been established with HelpHOPELive, a trusted nonprofit organization that has been providing community-based fundraising guidance to patients and their families for more than 30 years. All donations are tax-deductible, are held by HelpHOPELive in the South-Atlantic Kidney/Pancreas Transplant Fund, and are administered by HelpHOPELive for transplant-related expenses only. Please consider a contribution.

If we all work together we can make Paige’s prospects for the future much brighter. Thank you for your support.

Today is 5 months post transplant! Whew, what a ride! Creatnine hovers between 1.2 and 1.3, lower than the expectation of most kidney transplant patients and hg A1C is 4.9....normal healthy non-diabetics are between 4.8 and 6.2. And since I am no longer a diabetic, that puts me in the low range.....the lower the better! So basically both organs are kicking butt! Two more meds eliminated yesterday while at Duke, another 2 on Oct. 5!
