At 59 years old my mother, Sherita Justice Hargrove became ill and was diagnosed with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis after a lung biopsy. Now at 62 she is in need of a double lung transplant. Since December 2013 we have been traveling back and forth over 200 miles each way to Duke Transplant Center for evaluations, testing and consults.
My mom grew up in a family of eight children. She is a mother, grandmother and great grandmother who misses being active with her younger grandchildren the way she was with the older ones. But she still very much enjoys spending quality time with them. She also misses being a Lay Speaker at church, being a Sunday school teacher, leading bible study, singing in the choir and participating in various ministries. She dreams of returning to good health so that she can once again be an active participant in her family and her church.
While mom has a wonderful support group of family and friends, she is not financially able to pay the many medical expenses that her insurance does not cover, such as co-pays and anti-rejection medications. She already has traveling and lodging expenses not covered by her insurance as she is seen in the transplant center every three months. When the time comes for her transplant, she will have to relocate for approximately six months, which includes time for mandatory pulmonary rehab before and after transplant.
To help with mom’s uninsured expenses, a fundraising campaign has been established in her honor with HelpHOPELive, a trusted nonprofit organization that has been providing community based fundraising guidance to patients and their families for more than 30 years. All donations are tax-deductible, are held by HelpHOPElive in the South Atlantic Lung Transplant Fund and are administered by HelpHOPELive for transplant related expenses only. Please consider making a contribution. Every one counts.
On behalf of my mother and our entire family, we thank you in advance for your prayers and contributions.

Well..My caregiver(Darlene Drummond) and I have been in Durham for a month now, and as of yesterday, 10/05/2015, I am on the transplant list and can receive the gift of life any time now. Praise God!!! It has been a long journey so far, but God has kept me all the way. I'm sure it's hard on Darlene too. She gave up everything, including her job, to be my caregiver. I truly am blessed and I thank God for her and all of my family for their support. We have been in a hotel since we got to Durham and will move into an apartment on Thursday 10/8/15. We still need your help to fund our lodging expenses. Your contributions and donations are greatly appreciated. Thank you and God bless you.
I will be temporarily relocating to Durham, NC in two weeks to start the lung transplant process. I still need donations to help cover the cost of living there while there and still maintain my expenses here at home. My only income is social security disability and my only insurance coverage is medicare. The anti-rejection medications that I will have to take for the rest of my life are very expensive. Please donate to help me receive the gift of life. To everyone who has already donated, thank you and God bless you.
Hello everyone. A big "thank you" to all who have donated. The time has come for me to relocate to Durham to have a double lung transplant and although we have had successful fundraisers, we haven't raised the money needed to cover an apartment for the approximate six month stay. I will have to be there by Sept 1, 2015. Please donate if you can. Thank you and God bless you.
Thank you to everyone who has donated.
Well, It looks like I'm getting closer to transplant. I'm going for my "full" eval which includes transplant orientation, a heart cath and liver scan among other things. I will also meet the transplant surgeon. This journey is exciting and scary at the same time.
Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis(IPF) is a rare, serious lung disease. It is a condition in which the lung tissue become scared and thickened. "Idiopathic" is the medical term for " no known cause." The scaring and thickening limits how much air your lungs can take in and the ability for the lungs to transfer enough oxygen to the bloodstream. As result, your brain, heart and other organs may not get the oxygen they need to function properly.
Unfortunately there is no cure for IPF. The only treatment for me is supplemental oxygen and lung transplant.
Prayers and blessings for you Auntie!
