Many of you know the Van Sweden family and what amazing people they are. They have three beautiful children who are very active in swimming, softball, baseball and other activities. They have always been big in their community and now it is time for the community to help them. On May 19th they received news that stopped them in their tracks…their 11 year old daughter Jadelyn was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.
Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) is a cancer that affects the white blood cells. These cells fight infection and help protect the body against disease. Patients with ALL have too many immature white blood cells in their bone marrow. The treatment is typically chemotherapy, steroids, and sometimes a bone marrow or stem cell biopsy.
Jadelyn is doing as well as can be expected. She will be receiving her second round of the consolidation chemotherapy treatment soon which will mean a minimum of five days in the hospital. So far she has not had to have another bone marrow biopsy because she is responding well to the treatments. She has been neutropenic for the last three weeks (she has no immune system to help fight any germs off). We are hoping that the chemotherapy continues to be effective so we can avoid a bone marrow transplant.
Even though the family has medical insurance the bills are already piling up. After the insurance pays their part the family is still left with their portion of the medical costs. We are expecting the family’s cost to be at least $10,000.
To help with the financial burden of Jadelyn’s uninsured expenses, a fundraising campaign in her honor has been established with HelpHOPELive, a trusted nonprofit organization that has been providing community-based fundraising guidance to patients and their families for more than 30 years. All donations are tax-deductible, are held by HelpHOPELive in the Southwest Bone Marrow Transplant Fund, and are administered by HelpHOPELive for transplant-related expenses only.
Please consider making a monetary donation on this page if you are able.
Thank you for your support and generosity. Keep an eye on the website for upcoming events to help generate more funds for her medical costs.
Gratefully,
Ashley Moore
